Went to our local radio shack to buy some Verbatum DVD-R that are on sale, but they didn't have any. They did try to sell me some Fuji ones. Are these any good or should I stay away from them?

go for fujifilm (made in japan).
The taiwan are manufatured cmc you dont want those.
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

The following list is in preference order. The best discs are near the top of the list.

Almost flawless burns with 95-100% reliable results:
PVC = Pioneer = (-R)(-RW)
MXLRG01, MXLRG02 = Maxell = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals = (-R)<-----------------VERBATIM MY CHOICE #1
TDKG02 = TDK Corp = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
TAIYOYUDEN or YUDEN = Taiyo Yuden = (-R)<--------------FUJIFILM (made in japan) MY CHOICE #2

Decent discs, though not perfect, about 85-95%
success rate:

RICOHJPN = Ritek or Ricoh = (+R)
SONYD04 = Sony = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
PRODISC = Prodisc Media = (+RW)
INFODISC = Infodisc Media = (+RW)
RITEKG04 = Ritek = (-R)

Possunt Quia Posse Videntur.

I have had good luck with them- They are not made by CMC, at least mine weren't. My manufacturer code is prodiscFO1, and out of fifty I haven't had many coasters. (i had one that pixelated towards the end of the movie, and 2 that were my fault) My only concern is long term reliability. I got mine from best buy in December for $8.99 for 25. As far as I am concerned this is a quality disc for the money

Jizmak,

Thanks for the link, man. Lots of nice info there, especially the link to

I've been looking for an alternative to dvinfopro to do dvd surface scans. Now I've got one!

The Fuji 8X DVD-R made in Taiwan bought at BestBuy for #25 at $9.99 had ID of FULIFILM03, rated in 2nd tier of quality by www.digitalfaq.com
Am now on my second #25 spindall with no coasters or problem of any sort. Working well on my older NEC burner as well as my newer Pioneer. Hue of dye is "Ritek deep purple", not the "CMC bluish grey".
