I want to be able to make a copy of a PS2 game DVD and have it work without any modchip or swapping of the disc. I have a Plextor PX-712A DVD burner. Is there any way to do what I want to do? I am convinced that there is, but I may be wrong. Does the VariRec function on the drive help me?

PS2 games are actually pressed DVD/CD discs, they are not burned. PS2 games use the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc to identify themselves to the PS2 unit. The BCA is not part of a disc that you can burn on, it is only replicated on pressed discs.

So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

In that case, is there a solution (possibly one you guys have already named) that doesn't require either a modchip or swapping discs by opening the front cover of the tray? I just don't like the idea of taking parts of the PS2 off to play backup discs.

Yes you take the cover off
and use swapmagic disks (boot disks) and a slide card or slide tool.

So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

We all wouldnt be buying them if we didnt need them?
