i have been backing up dvd's for acouple months and have got it pretty much down. i recently purchased a pack of blank DVD-R 4x which says to get firmware for your 2x burner (which i have 2x) so you dont damage the burner. I have been looking all over the place but can find firmware for my dvd burner i have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4020B, i know its an old burner but it works so i dont want to have to get another one. does anybody know where the firmware for this burner is?

These are EXE files so you just download and run the newest one.

Just don't be doing anything else while flashing. Close all programs and windows. Don't interupt the process while it is flashing the drive. And don't do it if you think your power will go out while it is flashing the drive.

Which of the firmware files did you download? What is the filename of the downloaded firmware file?

When you downloaded you should have gotten an archive file named "dvrh2_f102". Double clicking the archive should have extracted into several files, one of which is named "GMA4020A109." Double clicking that file should have generated a window named "DriveUpdater" which allows you to choose a drive, denotes the current firmware and the new firmware versions, and an Update and Exit button. If you didn't get this, then perhaps your download was corrupted. Delete the files, empty the trash, restart your computer, download the archive file again, and good luck.

I got the A108 firmware to install and flash the drive is this sufficient even to allow me to burn with 4x discs or should I go for the A109 and try that?

I think it should but you will know if 4X is given as an option when you get ready to burn. One other point needs to be made. The firmware has write strategies for media identified by its media code. It is possible that the firmware might not have a descripter for the particular 4X media you have and thus will only burn at 2X. It might have descripters for other 4X media that will allow writing at 4X. You'll just have to try and see.
