I'm using pioneer ao8 16X16. Is it better to record at the speed of the dvd or burning at higher speeds create coasters or dvd's freezing

As long as you're using high quality media, the burn speed doesn't matter. If the quality of your media is questionable, then burn at slower speeds.

Most users here tend to burn at 4x regardless if it is top quality or not.
I never burn above 4x and it seems to work ok for me, but I guess it's up to you what you choose to burn at.

Balaam is exactly correct! The burn speed really makes no difference as long as you are having no problems at the speeds you are burninng? The outcome of the finished product will be the same regardless of what speed you burn at. It is also a good idea to stay at the speed that is stated on the DVD media itself, but some will copy with no problem at higher speeds.
