Problem with transcoding an AVI file in NVE

I keep trying and trying, but nero vision express won't make a dvd for me from an avi file. It transcodes for about 20 minutes and then when the preview window starts, it goes for a little bit then either the program freezes, or I get an error message. I don't understand why it is doing this!!!
