Burner Problems

I've been burning a lot of DVDs lately but my burner has never burned at a decent speed. It takes about 2 hours. The Burner is a 16x burner with 8x dvds. Another weird thing is that when I plug my dvd burner into the labtop its self it will not work. But when I plug it into a USB router(i think its called a router:something that adds extra USB ports) I think that is what is slowing it down. But i have not been able to work it otherwise. Any suggestions?

Are you using a usb 1.1 or a 2.0 cable? Does your computer have usb 2.0 support? What about the router, is it 2.0 compatible?

I'm pretty sure that the router isn't USB 2 but thats the only way it works. All my ports in my computer is USB 2. I just don't know how to go directly from my computer to my burner with no router.

Is it possible to disconnect the router just while you use the burner? Make sure the cable itself supports 2.0 as well. They usually have a hi speed label on them.

Remember that the speed of a USB 1.1 is about 40 times slower then a USB 2.0, hence the speed/burn problem.
Your burner should be USB 2.0 so there has to be some other problem.
Did you do a XP SP1 update on your laptop? That can knock out your enhanced USB ports.

Know this from some of my Intel boards...
Enabling Hi-Speed USB 2.0
Windows* XP Service Pack 1 must be installed to support Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Windows XP Service Pack 1 is available from Microsoft's support web site at: http://support.microsoft.com?. Hi-Speed USB 2.0 must be manually enabled on Windows XP systems that have been upgraded to Service Pack 1.
To manually enable Hi-Speed USB 2.0 once Service Pack 1 has been installed, complete the following steps:
Open the Device Manager for Windows XP
In the Other devices list, double-click the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Select the Driver tab at the top of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller Properties window
Click on the button labeled Update Driver
Click on the Next button
Click on the Finish button
Click on the Close button
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 should now be enabled.

Don't pay attention to my last reply. I was trying to do 10 things at once and some how posted to your thread by mistake. As for the usb service pack error, this should not be an issue if sp2 is installed. What about that cable? Is it 2.0 or not?

chrs6733, you don't need sp1, you have the most up to date service pack already.

Well what do you suggest since When I plug in my driver into my USB 2 in the labtop it won't work. But if I plug into the router USB 1.1 it won't work

Yeah but it only works through the router. I use Nero 6.6 and DVD Shrink 3.2

OK, now we're getting somewhere. Do you use a lot of compression, and do you click on deep analysis and quality enhacments?

All I do is use the back up button and it does everything fine that is when I have the router. But when It doesn't work right as I put in the blank DVD it will say burn failed and give me a lot of bull.

My computer is a Toshiba Intel Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz, and 480 MB of RAM. My external burner is a Mad dog multimedia 16X DVD-R

If you back up an entire movie menus and all, out of the two hours it takes to back it up how long does each of the following take?
Deep analization
Encoding
Writing to disc

Analysing takes about 2-3 mins
Encoding about 30
and Writing takes about a % a min

Well, I was going to say that 2 hrs is normal if you have the quality settings on. The only thing I can think of that may fix the slow burning problem is to connect the burner directly to the laptop and reinstall the driver. Make sure the cable you use is a high speed(2.0) one or else the system will only transfer at the 1.1 speed.
