Why is there even DvD-R and +R

I see no point in why there is even - and + since i have never herd any differant than the only differance between them is compatibility with hardware..players and burners and such. is there any other differance? If not what the @%^# did they even make two for anyway.

When the DVD spec was being developed the various consortiums behind it couldn't agree on a single spec so they broke into two camps that pushed the format they thought was better so now we have +R and -R.

Pretty much DAV. Its all marketing . Think of it this way AS IN VCR players ..BETA was the first format to come out then VHS came along and the format war was on VHS came out on top..even though BETA was first and actully the better format. but as far as the DVD dash R and DVD plus R neither one is better than the other format.

The biggest compatibility issue comes down to the particular make/model standalone you'll be playing your copies in. Some players can be real picky about what they'll play. Here's a good link to check player compatibility:
