Nero Recode2 is great, I use it quite often, but it won't help when trying to backup a copy protected disk (doesn't contain a decrypter). Try using DVDFab decrypter, it's free and updated to handle newer movie releases. DVDFab will backup the whole disk or just the main movie, once it's done, if the files are greater then 4.6GB in size, you can still use shrink as you normally would to reduce the size to fit into a DVD-5.

The link to DVDFab Decrypter is given below.

Use Anydvd and believe

I would suggest CloneDVD and CloneCd from Slysoft, http://www.slysoft.com/en/

CloneDVD2 is a good program however it is nothing like Shrink, but recode 2 is almost exactly the same with of course the removing encryption part. I don't speculate to many people use Shrink for Decrypting thier DVDs now a days anyway and if they do, well they shouldn't. ;-)

Point is if you are still looking for a program that does everything DVD Shrink will do then recode 2 is what you are looking for.

Not for free. Shrink is the best freeware transcoder available. The others here have given their preferences. Luckily most have trials so in the end you can try them out and make up your own mind. In order of preference I like Rebuilder with CCE, DVDCopy5, Recode, and CloneDVD. Shrink in my book rates near the last 2. If a bit faster I might consider it better.

All these programs require the copy protection be bypassed. For that I suggest RipIt4Me, which includes DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. FixVTS is built in for DVD compliance processing, which is often necessary with the newer copy protections.

I still like AnyDVD-Recode(just too easy) but ripit4me is making headway with Shrink or Recode

Headway? RipIt4Me may be a bit slower, but it works when AnyDVD won't. You can use RI4M ripped files in any program when done properly. That can no longer be said for AnyDVD. Arniebear showed me an excerpt from a Dec 06 history log where Slysoft says to use CloneDVD for ripping (which needs done for compliance processing with some newer protections). Instead of fixing the ripper, Slysoft sells you a transcoder that helps clean up the problems of the decryption tool. I'm not saying throw away the AnyDVD, but it's no longer the "go to" when a troublesome release comes along.

Nowadays it's AnyDVD + CloneDVD (for ripping) + another transcoder (if desired over CloneDVD). Slysoft has more or less told us AnyDVD is no longer a universal program and requires CloneDVD to be a sure thing.

Headway was meant to be with me, not in it's overall evaluation. It is what I fall back on when AnyDVD balks. But I still prefer the ease of AnyRecode.

jwaite, yes there are many pacakges that do what shrink does. I would have been best to state your reasons. I assume you can't copy everything you would like. Do you want to pay or do you want a freebee? I own 2 paid for packages but often use Ripit4me a freebee. The other great freebee is the DeFab bottom of the line. Both the freebees require shrink to do the shrinking. I have had the most problems with AnyDVD. They are usually slower to post solutions for new protection technology, than DeFab or Ripit4me. Ripit is the best solution for most problem disks. However, it is the slowest and has the most steps. I usually use DeFab Platnum because it is faster. I still force it to make video files so I can run FixVTS. Ripit also runs FixVTS. I do not like to go through the effort of making a disk then find out it is skippy or hangs. FixVTS is a QA step that cleans up raw (compressed or uncompressed) video files so this does not happen. If the files are all good it does not do anything. I can't remember the last time it did not do anything. DeFab Platnum is supposed to clean up the video but the finished product is not nearly as good.

I would get both freebees before spending money. You also need to read threads that mention a movie title in this forum. That is started by someone that could not copy a movie. That is where all the newest technologies are brought up. I believe many of the problems in these threads are not encryption problems but disk problems. Even new disks can be marginal. The term 'bad pressing' is used. Ripit is the best for 'bad pressings' and old scratched disks. I used to resurface disks. Now with a good burner and the right software, I can't remember the last time I had to grind a disk.

The most important step in doing a backup is getting a cleaned and compliant set of files to work with. Once that's done properly most decent programs can handle the transcoding/encoding and burning. And along the way we'll have those who make mistakes and don't realize where they did it, the occasional software problem, plus media interference and corruption problems.

Quote:
However, it is the slowest and has the most steps.

RI4M may be slower, but most steps? I open the program, open the DVD in 1-Click, wait for the analysis and click Next. That's a total of 3 clicks including turning the program on. One of the reasons the program is slower is because it includes the processing with the incorporated FixVTS. Remember to add that time if you rip with another ripper, i.e. DVDFab Decrypter, and need to add the processing to make the files compliant.

As for a bad press, all these programs have a problem and time out if the bad sectors are large enough in number. It's happened to me, so I'm well aware of the situation. And there's still room for the resurfacing tools. I haven't retired mine yet. Those flea market finds and used rental sales (not rentals) can still be in pretty sad shape.

Many of the problems encountered are due to the new copy protections and additional steps that are sometimes required. Sometimes the software suppliers are caught and it takes time to update the software, as happened with Saw 3, region 1. For a while, only RI4M was capable of Full Disc without editing. Then you can start adding up things like bad media and hardware. The top problem I've seen is copy protection and users having problems adapting to a different process when necessary.

with the protection on new movies shrink really doesn'y contain a decrypter either. CloneDVD and dvdfab devrypter both score higest of marks for me.

It's been pointed out that the Shrink decryption software was weak well before the heavier protection we're seeing now. Even when the software was still being supported, the author said to use DVD Decrypter as an alternative when problems happened with Shrink decryption. Alternative decryption for Shrink has been with us for a long time. It's just being needed more often nowadays. As mentioned Shrink no longer has support to update for newer protections. The new RipIt4Me has a nice feature, Skip to DVD Shrink. If the protection is light, RI4M tells you it's okay to use Shrink without auxiliary help. Here's what the changelog says:
Added code to detect whether the DVD appears to be protected. This is displayed in the main window during Step 1. If the DVD isn't protected, there's a new button in Step 1 to open the DVD with DVD Shrink directly.

DVD Shrink has good editing features and does most of what retail transcoders do. I don't understand why DVD Shrink is knocked because of the weak decryption software when most of the newer transcoders have none at all. Use RI4M and you will be told which movies will work with the Shrink decryption and which won't. If it won't work with Shrink, then it's hard to beat RipIt4Me at decryption and compliance processing.

While playing last night I did a movie with Ripit4me, newest version, and used Recode instead of Shrink to do the encoding. When I played the movie it froze my DVD standalone player(daewoo) and also my pc monitor. Had to push the off pc button to reboot. Did the disc over with Shrink, and it played fine in both places. Almost took ripit off and reinstalled but didn't. Strange coaster. It was CMC Mag but don't believe it was the disc. I finally got my stand alone to play it with coaxing.

Are you sure? LOL Sometimes I have a brain fart and don't have a clue what's going on. I keep chugging along and eventually get the job done. I've not had a problem with RipIt4Me since I started using it. I don't use the files with Shrink very often, but encode using RB Pro with CCE SP most of the time. That's how I did our last little problem release, Casino Royale, and the output was flawless. The files I get from RI4M are so clean and compliant, they've not failed to open in any program I've tried. My system is nothing special and I have no special video skills I'm using that I'm aware of. So, I have no idea why I'm having such excellent success when others are encountering problems, except I'm fair at following instructions and use good media. CMC is so bad, it caused the paint on my car to chip, made the dog bite the mailman, and made my beer disappear while I lamented the appearance of a blond haired bond. LOL

PacMan777, I don't use the one step, perhaps I should. I am untrusting and never took the time to learn what the one step did. It is not like it is much of an effort. I am really happy with the speed of DeFab Platnum it rips and compresses which is even faster on a slow computer with a fast drive it. I might even be faster yet with a faster computer. All subsiquent steps are much faster except for the burn which is fast anyway.

1-Click does the complete job in RipIt4Me. It does the whole job and removes the chance for user error some people are obviously creating with the wizard.

Nothing wrong with DVDFab Decrypter. If you like using it and it gets the job done, that's what it's all about. Since they got it back up to speed last month, it appears to be doing pretty good.

I agree with you there, I don't use shrink any more and when I use Recode2, AnyDVD is running in the backround. Recode2 produces excellent good quality backups, I personally haven't had a problem with using it along with AnyDVD, the two so far have worked great together.

My interpretation of the statement is that the member(jwaite) was asking if there was another app that would rip/decrypt/transcode/and possibly burn the files to disk, nero's recode2 was mentioned, if you have Nero and have used it's recode2 app, you kown that it will rip/transcode/and burn the files to disk, but it doesn't contain a decrypter for copy protected DVD disks. I did mention DVDFab as an alternative for the ripping and decrypting phase, you can then use shrink or Recode2 to complete the job.

Now if we want to go by the wording of the question on a replacement for Shrink, I guess we can go by john's interpretation, decryter, and transcoder (poor thing doesn't have a burner, but supports a few). The DVDFab Platinum from DVDIdle fits the bill and then some. It is the program that DVDFab Decrypter is borrowed from. So, it has good decryption, transcodes, and burns the output. It's the all in one program and one of the few good ones that still exists. It's not one of my favorites, but it has a good rep.

Slysoft has said CloneDVD2 is suggested for ripping the newer releases. That's in the 12/26/06 history log. AnyDVD has proven not to be the universal decrypter it once was. It has trouble with Shrink nowadays and even Recode has been limited to movie only a few times. It's still the best for what it does, so I'm not throwing it out yet. ;)

I think kjwaite has gotten enough suggestions to keep busy for a while with all the trials. After learning about the transcoders, the quality of encoders with Rebuilder and CCE or ProCoder 2 should be checked into.

The DVDFab Platinum from DVDIdle does fit the bill as a single solution, but I was trying to keep it like shrink, free, although Nero isn't, but most members seem to have it and aren't aware of the recode2 app.

I mentioned some time ago that DVD Shrink is the best freeware available, to get the equivalant or better a person has to go to retail. Like you said, Recode or any of the other tools mentioned here are mostly retail. About the only freeware tools come in segments. The separate rippers like RipIt4Me and DVDFab Decrypter, encoding programs such as Rebuilder, and burners like ImgBurn. Put together they do a good job. I'm not sure about the free version, but RB Pro supports burning with ImgBurn. So that is a seamless encoder/burner setup similar to Shrink. As I mentioned, the best thing now is for jwaite to try some of the trials and see how they work.

My favorite decryption is with RipIt4Me. Something about Decrypter, I've used it for the longest, by itself, with AnyDVD and now with RipIt4Me. RI4M may be a little slower, but it's been a sure thing since I started using it. Once I get a good set of compliant files, I use RB Pro with CCE SP to encode the backup and then burn with Nero. Some old habits are hard to break. ;) For quick jobs I use DVDCopy 5 from InterVideo. It's one of the fastest, high quality transcoders I've seen and it burns. Plus it outputs formats others don't. We all have our favorites and most of them work the way we want. Jwaite needs to experience some of the trials to make a personal decision.
