I'm looking at either purchasing either Alcohol 120% or CloneCD (the newest version) to back up some Rosetta Stone protected Data/Media CD's.

Any suggestions on which would work better and why ( or if you have another program you'd suggest, please do).

Thanks!

I take it you're referring to this guy?

If this is the case you'll want to scan the disc with A-Ray Scanner ( http://www.aray-software.com/ ) to determine what type of protection is being used. Some of Data/Media CD's use different protections than the PC games do.

Your choice of software to purchase can depend on what else you may use them for. All three are very good at PC protections but they also have individual strengths/weaknesses.

CloneCD is a very competent program with an easy to use interface and will copy just about any protection. It's main downfall is that it gets blacklisted quite often meaning certain games refuse to run if they detect CloneCD on your system.

Alcohol 120% is the most versatile of the three. It supports multiple virtual drives and has some very good emulation options for those who don't have EFM capable burners. It's also very good at backing up SafeDisc but has a hard time with the newer versions of SecuROM.

BlindWrite is my personal favorite. It works magic against SecuROM and as well as SafeDisc up to version 3.20 (BW 4.57 is needed for SafeDisc 3.20.022). The basic interface is very simple but if you want more options you can use a small app called BlindWrite5 Tweaker to gain much more control over the settings.

Its for the Rosetta Stone Language Software CD's... I'm not sure what the protection is yet. I'll scan them and get back to you. I appreciate your and everyone's help.

I'll probably scan them, and report back later this week (as I'm bogged down with homework).

Thanks for your time and your response, I appreciate it!

the new versions of Clone CD are no good. They do not make clones. Only versions 3.3x and earlier make true 1:1 copies of CDs.

I agree, the new clone cd still has issues with blacklisting games which I dont like. I still dont understand why this is a big issue with clonecd?

Thanks for the inside scoop, djscoop :P

I haven't used CloneCD in years so I have to go by what others have reported. All I need is BlindWrite and my Plex Premium :)

don't play many PC games, so I've never heard of that problem, I just know that the new versions don't make true clones, so I don't trust them

no prob, Neph

In the very early days CloneCD was the biggest and most popular name in CD duplication so because of it's longtime notoriety it's the most targeted app for blacklisting :)

Now thats funny :D

I have a million games on the PS2 and they dont even play them and I have 2 modded PS2's so they dont fight over the same game.

I now have to make a backup with my pc games so they dont fight over the same games.

So now my PS2, and Gamecube is literally collecting dust.

lol. sounds like a busy household. what kind of music do you spin? I don't really DJ anymore...haven't for about 3 years. just haven't had time as I've gotten into teaching audio lately. I used to DJ weddings off of my computer. holy crap, it was the easiest gig ever. Good money, same songs over and over, everyone is always in a good mood at weddings, and free booze. It was a sweet job. I was quite sad when I had to sell my setup.

I love house but every party I did was hip hop.

I would never sell my equipment! My kids get on it from time to time but my little one always bugs me to get on it.

house is good, I listen to a lot of trance and jungle. I've always wanted to learn how to spin on turntables. I did all my DJing off of my computer, which worked for the gigs I did. But like you said, it takes a LOT of patience. I actually have a Technics 1200, but I just listen with it. Tried scratching, but ended up scratching my records and messing up the needle, so I got frustrated and gave it up.

I have a DMS3 and a Matrix Infinity and as far as backing games go I would suggest DVD Decrypter (thats waht I use)

you made a smart move choosing the Matrix Infinity.

So, I just broke out my Rosetta Stone Language data/media CDs today. I want to back them up. I've downloaded A-Ray Scanner V.2.0.2.0 and ran a Scan on the Disk... It runs its scan and just says showing the first CD scan and the second CD scan below:[00:28:38 AM] --- File(s) Scan Finished [153.13s] ---
[00:34:15 AM] --- File(s) Scan Finished [7.52s] ---

and that's all. Does this mean they are not protected? How do I go about using Alcohol 120 or Blind Write to back these up? Any further help/ suggestions is much appreciated!

Thanks!

Either they aren't protected at all or they use some form of protection that A-Ray doesn't recognize. I'd go ahead and try A120 first using the "General Protected CD" profile and setting both the read and write speed to 8 or 12X for starters and if that doesn't work try knocking the speeds down to 4X.

I'm trying to backup a PC software language program called Rosetta Stone (Spanish).

This comes with 2 CDs. One, is called the application disk, which loads the program which the second CD (the lesson CD) uses to run itself.

I used A-Ray Scanner to find what type of encryption they have, and it came up with no encryption.

I was able to burn a copy of the lesson CD, but the application CD will not burn. While recording, Alcohol 120 comes up with several read errors at different locations. Does this mean that this CD is actually encrypted? Any clues as to how I may find what type of encryption is used?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you all for your help,

~BB

Good news!!!

After several days of trying, using every program under the sun, I was finally able to back these up!!!!

WOOHOOO.

Thanks to all who responded, I appreciate your help tremendously.

For some reason, no copied CD's will work, regardless of the format used. However, backups will work if saving a file using Alcohol 120%, and then mounting it to a virtual drive to run it!!!! Sheesh... wish I would've known about the virtual drive sooner.

Thanks all!!!
