I've googled 'til I can't google no more trying to find the Xvid codec and the mp3 codec that will play my downloaded .avi file without glitches. Without going into every precious detailed step I followed, I ultimately wiped out all of my Xvid and MP3 codes and downloaded FFDShow. I know, some would say this pack never fails, others say don't use codec packs. Anyway, I tried again on RealPlayer and it still didn't quite sync everything up. BUT, after a gazillion attempts to use WMP 7.1 and failing, on a lark I tried WMP again and it worked, at least for a while.
Here's what has me pulling my hair out about this: I get 95% smooth video playback and the audio is only slightly out of sync at the very beginning, but is completely in sync by the very end. Yet in between the sync is all over the place. I haven't traced the 43-minute video all the way through, but at some point the video must be catching up to the audio if it finishes completely in sync.
I thought I could approach this solely from the audio side, but there should be nothing wrong with the .wav I'm using, and the sound doesn't jump or skip at all (though "s's" are a tad scratchy). Anyway, now I'm thinking it's a video codec problem (though I have the right Xvid codec I think), or maybe the .avi file needs some manipulation, which I wouldn't have a clue about being a newbie to this business.
Some additional info: because VirtualDub can't use DirectShow filters, I had to put in Koepi's Xvid codec and a different mp3 codec in order to just get to a point where I could save the avi file under a different file name using the .wav file for audio. But WMP 7.1 apparently doesn't like this Xvid codec, so I had to uninstall it in favor of the one in the FFDShow bundle.
Sorry for the long-winded post, but I figure better to err on the side of too much than not enough info. If anyone had any ideas on what I need to do, I'll put down my mailbag long enough to read some posts.
Thanks!
