yeah, i had the same concern. taiyo tuden isn't labeled anywhere on the disc.
when i ordered the discs i thought i was getting the 4X discs but they sent me the 8X instead.
i ended up paying $35.00(including shipping) for the 100 discs.
can anyone else confirm that these are TRUE TY dvds?

lindarose and mygraine,
im in the same boat..same inner serial number on the ring, and same concern(s)
my 3500 NEC AG can't do PI/PIF test so i really can't be sure either
the 4x media did write a 8x easily w/ DVD Shrink (NEC 3500AG 2.18) on 3 different movies..playback was flawless
below is the complete code from DVDinfo, as u can see it spits out TYG01 ... anyone else with a PI/PIF scanable drive and with these 4x DVD-R disc care to clear up this whole situation, thanks
Complete Media Code

Thanks all for your input. guess I'll keep my discs.
You were all so helpful and I really appreciate it.
I was so disappointed with supermediastore. But all is well, I think. I'm happy I found this site. You folks are too good.
thank you, thank you and again

Yup, the 4x TY disks supermediastore has on sale are genuine. I've gone through about 1/5 of the 100, all flawless as usual.
@gerard514,
tyg01 are 4x, tyg02 are 8x. Thats the only difference.

my own sense of it is that rather than "fakes" what is going on is the marketing of various manufacturing runs, with perhaps different contracted specs, different level of quality control or even rejected batches that are resold in a supposedly limited way but then get ont the market.
they would have the given codes, but any variety (or lack of) label, "brand" etc. the code would be "legitimate" yet the could be vastely different quaility.
TY and Ricoh both sell media not only under their own name but are also contracted to sell under other brands.
The question never asked when discussing fackes is the much more likely scenario that a buyer might say we will take lower specs, we want faster turnaround, we want less loss from quality control failure, etc.
Also some of these manufacuterers might have been used to "disposing " of poor runs by selling the disks with the limitatin they could not be sold with any the manufacturer listed in any ads or product descripton or not sold in certain markets.
Our company contracts a lot of manufacture and these scenarios are not uncommon.

These are genuine oldstock Taiyo Yuden brand TYG01 disks.
@S2K,
It is possible that the disks Taiyo Yuden sells to be rebranded are inferior stocks, but there is no evidence, anectdotal or otherwise, that disks actually made by TY have been unreliable. Seeing that there is no evidence that any media TY produces is of substandard quality, I feel that they are the one manufacture to which the rules of thumb you stated don't apply.
@gerard514,
Taiyo Yuden brand disks have no identifying marks of either the disks themselves, or the packaging. It doesn't matter where you buy them, they won't have identifying marks on them.

listen, i gotta be honest. i burned at least 10 TY discs and for some reason i got 5 coasters! Could it be because of my cheap-a$$ BTC brand DVD burner? Moreover, can anyone tell me if there's a dvd burner (internal) that will play on ALL dvd players? thanks in advance.

A moderator over at cdrinfo feels that these are B Grade TY and that is why they are selling G02s as 4X. I have burned and scanned a few on my 3500 and 812S and they look genuine at 4X and at 8X for both the G01s and G02 ( I have been shipped both). If he is correct I would keep these at 4X as they are perfect at that burn speed.

MyGraine - try burning at a lower speed - maybe a firmware update might help. I personally prefer TY's and have had no problems even burning at 12x- 16x. I use silver injet/ white inkjet and silver thermal TY's mostly -R's. I burn with either a Lite On SOHW832 or Pioneer DVR 108. Since switching to TY's no one has had a problem with my TY -R's

Has anybody actaully recieved TYG02 when they bought any of the 4x TY's that have been on sale recently? I got mine at supermediastore, and they were TYG01, which is genuine A-Grade 4x TY. Its totally possible that that mod has some specific info on the batch he is talking about, but according to all the info I've seen and reported in other posts in that forum, the guy is a little confused. First off, I've never read anything official or verifiable that says that Taiyo Yuden sells different grades. Second, the guy says they are Bgrade, because they can be burned at 8x, but are sold as 4x media. Well, the thing is, most of the newer burners can burn genuine TY media reliably at faster speeds then it is officially rated for. My 8x +r's can be burned at 16x, and my 8x -r's can be burned at 12x. According to that guys reasoning, genuine Taiyo Yuden 8x disks are actaully B-grade 16x and 12x media. lol
I could be wrong, but I don't think that guy knows what he's talking about on this matter.

the serial number on the disc tells what speed disc is
GDxxxxx are 4x discs
GGxxxxx are 8x discs
something isn't right because i am sure supermediastore is not being generous and sending everybody 8x discs when 4x discs are being ordered

Those are genuine. If you need them to be inkjet printable, you can't get better disks.

@mygraine,
With the 50% coaster rate you have going, the problem has to be something with your setup. Some burners just don't like some media. I can't imagine you having the same problem with a decent burner. Shop around and compare the new plextor, nec3520, pioneer and lighton. Those are all great burners, and have become pretty cheap lately. You can get the nec 3520 for ~$60 at places like newegg.com.

hey thanks for all the help guys, but another problem that i have is that my successful dvd burn's only work on one of my two dvd players. I received other people's burned dvd's and they play perfectly on both of my dvd players. I use 1clickcopydvd to rip and copy2dvd to burn, are there better programs out there that i might consider?

Mygraine,
It could be your DVD player - are they the same brand?
As you can tell it can be anything from the media you use, your burner, software, DVD player etc. Also after you burn a DVD look at the back - does it look like a clean burn (can't see any flaws or multi colored rings)
Some DVD players will read through these while others will not.
I use AnyDVD with Nero Recode, DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter with Nero Recode.

Balaam:
I have received both 4X G01s and 8X G02s from shop4tech and from supermediastore when I ordered TY 4X -R. They were all wrapped in exactly the same tape wrap and there is no way the dealer could tell that they were G02 or G01. The choice had to be made at the manufacturer. I am also doubtful that these are "B" grade and I have scans that confirm that these are quality. I have to assume TY needs cash for some reason and dumped a load of -R media on the market. See my scans here:
