you "could" use it with a slide card or flip top. BUt the best method is to have a direct boot mod chip. The whole point was to NOT have to fiddle with the playstation at all, or be swapping discs all around to access your different applications.

Can you please help me with a fairly simple question. I am wondering if what I am trying to do is actually possible. It looks like I should be able to do what I want having read through all 17 pages of this thread, but I have not found the correct method yet.

I want to connect an external hard drive to my PS2 via USB using a 3.5" or 5.25" external enclosure and play my PS2 games from the hard drive.

I have played around with your All-in-one disk with some success.

I can get into LaunchELF OK and load up some of the utilities on the disk. However none of the utilities can see my USB device at all. My PC can see the drive OK. I have tried formatting the drive as NTFS, FAT and also as a PS2 drive using winHIIP but apps like USB_HDD_ADVANCE and STINKYS_HDLOADER cannot find a USB device connected.

If I connect a 512MB USB flash drive to my PS2 then USB_HDD_ADVANCE will find that OK. I have used three different external USB enclosures and three different hard drives (20GB, 80GB and 200GB) with no luck.

My PS2 has been modded (but I am not sure exactly what chip has been used).

I can see that apps like HDLOADER looks for an INTERNAL hard drive connected using the IDE interface of the seperate ethernet adapter. I do not have the seperate ethernet adapter so I cannot test this theory.

Should I be able to use an external USB hard drive to play PS2 games?

look on the internet for the HDD setup utility for USB Advance. Do a search, you should be able to find it. Not on this forum though. It should format the hdd in whatever format you need it to be in. I think it has to be in FAT format, not NTFS. But having never actually used a USB hdd I cant say for sure.

I have tried the USB advance with a memory card and my digital camera and it saw that just fine. But I dont know what format those cards are in. The hdd should be the same though.

If you have a fat PS2 then do yourself a favor..... go to the store and buy a netword adapter. And plug it internally. Not only does it play faster, it keeps the system alot neater because you dont have peices hanging off (ie: an external USB hdd).

Playing off a USB hdd is actually SLOWER than playing off a CD. So the ONLY reason you would ever want to do that is if you had a slim PS2 and needed it for piracy. Otherwise, you are better off just running a backup disk in your ps2.

Thank you for the link.

I have actually already been down that path. I have formatted the drive, loaded a game onto the drive and have plugged it into the PS2. Now the question is how do I get the PS2 to look at the HDD and load the game?

I have used your AIO disk and started up the .elf's but none appear to see my external HDD and allow me to run a PS2 game (although interestingly if I format the HDD as NTFS then LaunchELF will see the drive by selecting MASS, but LaunchELF cannot load a PS2 game)

I understand from your previous post that you do not have a USB HDD to try it out on. From what I can see, the tools on the AIO disk are for use with an internal HDD via the ethernet adapter. Is this right? If so, I can see why you suggest to go to the store and buy an adapter.

Thank you for your help so far.

Like I said. I have only experience with the internal HDD. I dont see the point to running the external ones for a number of reasons. BUt when I did test it with a USB memory card it showed up just fine. So I suspected it would work fine with a hdd as well. It appearantly is NOT the case for you.

Try the link the other member just posted. It seems to be pretty in depth. The only problem you may have is that you are not using swap magic to boot into the .elf. So leave that part out.

Also I noticed there is a new version of USBADVANCE out. You may try that one if you havnt already. Its version 1.

thanks Stinky_1, helped clear up some stuff I didn't know.
When ppl think of the v12-v15 slimline, they think they can't use an internal HDD anymore...this is untrue. Too many ppl think the USB Advance is fast, but it's only USB 1.1 which is not even 1.2Mbps. Open the PS2 and look inside, you will see a # of places where the Network Adapter used to connect. $ony didn't want to reengineer the entire system (got lazy I guess), so they just "cut off" the Network Adapter. But the points to solder are still there....

Look up the XCM HD Connect on Google, here's a picture: http://www.gamefreax.com/shop/pix/a/n/1117813480-24946.hdconnect.jpg and there is also the HD Combo http://www.hdcombo.com which gives you BACK what $ony took away on the slimline. You'll have the fast speeds of the fat PS2's hard drive by connecting your own through either of these.

if you're a college student, do NOT settle with the RIAA http://tinyurl.com/37oz2z

It's not the link to Stinky's disc, but an ever better one:

http://www.tna.sksapps.com/ (Click the 0.3 version)
(Password is "TnA Beta 0.3 Final - Image (www.ps2tools.de)" without the quotes, and no, me not giving out the password/link is not illegal or anything, the whole thing comes from this site: http://web02063.prolocation.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12927&post...)

It basically has everything you'd ever need for your PS2, from modchip firmware to elfs (just about every elf, updated, ever made). And you can also use it on your computer b/c it has some useful PC programs like WinHIIP and Apache. The file is pretty hefty, so I burned it to DVD using Stinky's instructions and it works for me (along with some mp3's and roms).

It's Festivus for the rest of us!

I dont see how you can consider this disk to be "way better" than mine. All he did was bloat it up with every single homebrew app made for the PS2. I choose to stick to apps that everybody would want, and leave enough space for all your roms. You were always able to add any other apps to my disk that you wanted.

Did this guy ever get the launchelf config file reading off the CD? that is where I left off last time. At the time that I made my disk (2 years ago!!) no elf booting app supported disk booting. Everyone told me it was impossible. And that I need to quit or buy a mod chip that suppoted it.

This guy is just a rip off artist! Taking my disk, loading it with more apps and adding the newest version of launchelf (which my disk had at the last update).

It would be fine, if the guy just gave some credit where it was due. But whatever. He can do his things. I could not offer the disk for free and answer all the questions I was getting, and still have a life.

Hopefully his disk works for you. I sold my PS2 now, so I am not going to be doing any more support or modding for it.

I am currently working on support for homebrew on a 2.6 firmware PSP. Maybe when I get somethign worth sharing this guy can rip that off too and take all the credit!

It's not really a "rip-off" of "your" boot disc because the guy started it in October of 2004, which is before you started your first thread (where you didn't even know how to do it), and now, burning a disc with LaunchELF is very common knowledge, just about anybody at any PS2-burning-related forum will tell you how. And how do you know if people don't want just "your" apps? Did you ever ask them if they wanted more? And if they want more roms, all they have to do is burn them separately on a disc and then swap them for the boot disc when you want to play the roms (as in the SNES emulator).

It's Festivus for the rest of us!

swap a disc???!! are you mad!!?

The whole point of my disk was to make it so you NEVER had to open the CD tray of your ps2 again. ANd I would say I succeded. Since I Made my disk my tray only opened maybe 2 or 3 times.

ANd YES I did ask what people wanted! But thank you for your concern.

Dont get me wrong, Im glad you found a disk that is "so much better" than mine. That means I wont have to deal with all your questions on how to get it to work. Or other peoples as well.

My disk started for me, I made it for me from the ground up. I made it at a time when everyone said it was not possible.

When I was done and it worked, people asked how I did it. I layed it out in english on the process to make it..... it seemed people had a hard time figuring it out. SO I made a downloadable disk to save people the trouble. I offered it all for free. I did that for over 1 year. Then people got lazy. They wanted me to practically come to their house and set it all up for them, so they didnt have to worry about it.

ANd some idiots started asking if they could use it with no mod chip, or if they could download swap magic and use that with my disk and no mod chip..... I started getting pissed off at the dumb questions I was answering day in and day out. So I started charging a service fee. People got all the tech support they wanted until they had the disk running for a very small part of my time.

Now you say its common knowledge how to make a boot cd!? Well it was easy when I did it, so its no surprize people have FINALLY figured out how to do it now. DOes that make you smart? You can download a disk and burn it to CD?

well I guess it puts you in the top 50% bracket. Since most guys couldnt figure it out on their own. Or....... maybe your one of the guys I had to answer dumb questions for!!

Either way, good for you. Like I said, I am not making or supporting my disk anymore. Evolution will dictate that things get better. So its great that a disk now is better than my disk I stopped making over a year ago. If that was not the case we would all still be playing PONG!

But I was still a Pioneer of the boot disk, at least on this forum. And there was nothing of the sort on any other prominant PS2 forum at the time. ( I was a member to them all, and asked questions about them on them all). I just stuck to this forum because it was the tamest of them all. It wasnt a bunch of 14 year old kids being imature. People that actually appreciated hard work, and a good idea. Not rip off artists.

I havnt spent much time on here lately, but maybe its turning into the rest of them now? I dont know. And dont care.

ja..... Mata!
