I just got a MicroAdvantage 16DDVDRW-A13 and already update the firmware version 70. I have try burning using DVD Shrink 3.2 with DVD Decrypter. I have also tried with Nero Version 6, but still can't get to burn. I am using HP dvd+r 8X media. I used DVD Identifier to know that the actual manufacturer ID is CMC Mag EO1. I check MicroAdvantage's website and see that the burner supports this media. I'm at the point of not knowing what else to do.

I got the whole "shrinking" part down, but the actual process of burning just can't do. Below is a portion of the log. Could some one help me understand what I may be doing wrong. Thanks.

You may want to:
1) burn at lower speed (e.g. 2-4x)
2) burn to HD first

Good luck!

C-mags have struck again!!!!

Cmc Mag E01: C-magnetics corp. are the manufacturer of you HP +8x media,C-Mags for short. This is one of the manufacturers thay you want to stay away from.

Do Like scf_au posted, burn them slower. 4x is about normal, but seeing as how they are c-mags,you may have to go 2.4x.

Another thing about poor quality manufacturers, you have to burn slower and they tend to have more trouble when you view those backups on your stand alone players.

Also in dvd shrink: Preferences/edit/set backup target custom/4300 mbs/and click ok.
This will also help keep from burning outer edge.Uneven dye on the outer edge of disc can cause a lot of issues, reducing that target will help on some problems of poor media.

When you run out of these, get some good media. Less problems, better playability on stand alones, and a lot less headaches.

Abort decrypting for that particular file.
Decrypt the rest.
Run Decrypter choosing only the file that did not burn.
This mostly works.

Let me get this straight: Are you unable to burn anything or are you just unable to burn a particular movie?

Ok I am glad that someone finally posted this. I bought the same drive from OfficeMax about 3 weeks ago, upgraded it to firmware A070. Now it does not play any DVD Videos. I have a Windows XP SP2 machine. Windows Explorer does not display the VIDEO_TS or AUDIO_TS folders properly. Sometimes it is one or the other. And sometimes when the VIDEO_TS folder does show up in Explorer, I see no big files in it. PowerDVD5 just starts and stops. Audio CDs seem to behave ok on the drive but I had a problem with installer CDs. So far I can say it seems to work well only with audio CDs And this is supposed to be a dual-layer DVD burner! And I got in touch with MicroAdvantage support over this issue. We covered a lot of ground like what mode it is running in (PIO/Ultra-DMA) - it was in Ultra-DMA mode as is the default case. They have not been able to help me so far. I got them to send me the original firmware version (A04B) just in case the upgrade screwed it up. But even the downgrade in firmware did not help. I am still clueless about this. Not a single DVD Video is being recognized by Windows Explorer on this drive. So it is not surprising to me that DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypt report errors (this is happening to me too). I have another DVD drive - an Iomega drive that works perfectly fine with all the DVD Videos that do not play on the MicroAdvantage drive. Since I am not getting much help from their support, I am open to new ideas. I wondered if it is an XP UDF support issue but then my other drive should not have worked. Also I think it would be a good idea if VIBRNT1 got in touch with MicroAdvantage support so that we can pressure them to look into this issue more seriously.

VIBRNT1, could you confirm if you have any problems watching DVD Video? Are you able to see all the folders in your Windows Explorer?

Gentlemen,

We will have to deal with each of you seperatly.

VIBRNT1, welcome to aD,

First off - I need to know what DVD you're ripping.

What Guide OR Guides are you using ?

What programs are you using ? To rip ? To edit ? To Burn ? You say you've used DVD Shrink with DVDD and Nero doing what with which ?

What settings are you using on DVD Shrink ? Nero ?

Was there an error message ? What exactly did it say ?

Exactly where are you and what are you doing when your error occurred ? Were you using your PC for anything ? If so, what ?

What are your PC's specs ?

If you are NOT using Nero in the "automatic"Mode, why are you attempting to burn it using Nero Express ?

Use the Burning ROM Mode -

Follow this ~>
(You may wish to write it down)

HINT:
First, create a folder for your work on your desktop OR somewhere on your HD where you can find it again. - Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (it's case sensitive) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it's contents in order to work properly -

Burning a file made by DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use your "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don't use Nero's Wizard), trace your path back to C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management., you don't have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished and ready to go . . . .

OK then, is everyone comfy ? Good - its now time for - -
"Uncle" ScubaPete's Step by Step, Let's burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
Please follow this guide EXACTLY - I'm going to attempt to make this as easy and painless as I possibly can. To get to Nero Classic, follow the "Bouncing ball". First, - lets go to Start, All Programs, then Nero, then Nero Ultra Edition and finally Nero Burning ROM.

When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose "DVD". Directly under that click on the "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the "DVD Video" window. In the left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In the "File Browser" screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the "Shift" key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left and release the mouse button. Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match
on a disc
, and then click "OK."

Now, clear the room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STAND AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Do not fold spindle or mutilate and never mess with the lady when she's working - it could be hazardous to your health, (Government warning) -
Go and have your coffee, and bring me back a cup ~ when Nero is done, she will let us know ;-))

Let me know how you do . . .

Pete

Hi maskosant,

Your turn -

Most important - Who installed your drive ?

Next:

Is your drive internal ?

Are you using a primary and secondary IDE cable and if you are, which one is your burner on ?

What setting are you using for it on your IDE cable, is the burner set as a master OR slave ?

Are you using a 40-Pin OR 80-Pin cable ?

Up-to-date drivers ? (Not Firmware, drivers.)

Proper jumper configuration ?

Do you have a working ASPI layer ?

ASPI Checker.
Ascertains your ASPI layer's presence and operation status

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?language=English+US&filekey=aspichk.exe&sess=no

DVD Identifier.
Provides us with important info about your discs.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

When was your last Disk Defrag ?
If you have to think about it, it's been far too long.
You need to do it now ! ! !

Let me know where you stand.

My drive does not recognize or play DVD movies either. I still haven't gotten the thing to burn yet. I had to give it up for a week cause it is driving me crazy.

Pete,

Thanks for your attempt to help.
I've tried your suggestion on how to burn. I don't think it is a problem with how I use the programs to burn. I actually used Shrink, Decryptor, and Nero on someone else's computer and taught them to how to burn DVD's using their burner. I believe it comes down to that my burner is a cheap piece of junk.

To answer your questions, just to see . . .

I've tried several movies. I get the movie on my hard drive fine. I've done it in both fashions as ISO Image File and Video TS folders.

Again I've used Shrink and Decryptor together to rip and burn. I've gotten errors. I've used Shrink with Nero and gotten errors. I used Shrink to put the files on the hard drive then tried Decryptor and Nero and gotten errors.

My exact error message from Nero was posted earlier.

I really starting to believe it is a hardware issue. That is why I tried to talk to someone else that is having a problem. I wasn't ignoring your suggestions, but actually was in the process of trying your suggestions. I do appreciate your help.

VIBRNT1,

I read your Nero log and 3 things stood out - it is why I continued my questions.

Here are the wrong things - from your log:
Quote:
Nero version: 6.3.1.17 (Nero Express)
1. You are burning using Nero Express NOT Nero's Burning ROM which should be used when burning a DVD.
Quote:
15.2.2005
DVD-Copy on the fly
2. You are using Nero's Copy on the Fly - This is only to be used when copying a copy - One disc to another. never, ever from the HD.
Quote:
Burn process started at 8x (11,080 KB/s)

As was pointed out, you set your speed too high - though if you had been burning with the correct app and from the HD, it probably would have been alright - not smart but you may have gotten away with it.

Hence you recieved the following information:
Quote:
Verifying disc position of item 0 (not relocatable, no disc pos, no patch infos, orig at #0): write at #0
Nero ran for approx. 1 min, 20 seconds - The majority of the time, shutting down.

You need to be using Nero in the "automatic" mode with DVD Shrink not Nero Express (wizard) and never "Copy on the Fly".

What we need are logs from Nero when you're using proper programs - THEN Nero can tell us what went wrong -

VIBRNT1,

If you feel that your burner is to blame, take the burner out from your PC and temporarly install it in another PC to ascertain if indeed it works properly - That will tell the tale . . . .

Hey All, including Brother ScubaPete:

I did not mean to be disrespectful by not replying. I was actually really tied down with some other matters that I had to put the whole DVD burning matter on the back burner (pun intended!) Suffice it to say that I did run the ASPI test and I got the message:

ASPI is not properly installed. One or more components has been replaced with older versions of the software.

Now I don't know which of the four files listed is the culprit but I do know my IOmega drive is working like a charm regardless of the ASPI test. I did spend 80 bucks on my MicroAdvantage drive and I do need to get it working. But does the ASPI layer matter so much to one drive and not to the other? That is strange. I can understand if there was a problem common to both drives.

Other responses expected of me:

My drive is internal. I did install my own drive and without sounding vain I can say I have prior experience in the matter. I am using the secondary IDE cable with the problematic MicroAdvantage drive set as master and the working IOMega drive set as slave. I even tried it out with just the MicroAdvantage drive alone. I am using a 40 pin jumper. As for drivers being out of date or up to date let me say I did not have to do anything special when I bought either drive. I have used whatever drivers came with Windows XP Service Pack 2. MicroAdvantage does not provide any drivers with the burner anyway. As for analyzing the DVD, I mean I could do that for you guys but I feel it makes no sense since not a single DVD disk works on the MicroAdvantage drive. So I feel it is not the disk but the drive that is the focus of the problem.

It is so very nice when you give us the information to solve your problem :D)

You need to use an 80-pin cable and then all will be well in Whoville -

Change the cable, that's the ticket -

It should make all the difference -

Salutations Brother Scuba Pete,

Would you please explain why an 80-pin cable would work in place of a 40 pin one? Because if I am not mistaken the cable that came with the drive was also 40 pin. And in fact I used to run a CDROM Drive and DVD-RW in tandem on this same cable. I removed the CDROM drive and put the MicroAdvantage drive in its place. So this is news to me about needing an 80-pin cable. But I am always keen on new info...

Thanks

Better Data transfer -

Try it you'll like it.

All you do is buy the cable, the pin configuration remains, you are using 80-wires in the cable :)

Go my friend, it's only a couple of bucks -

Scuba are you telling me that is the reason my drive does not recognize DVDs?
