Just wondering,when making a backup of movie what speed should I burn at?

Like for games 2.4x works always for me. But what about retail movies? can I burn them at 4x or even maybe 8x without any probs? or do I have to burn them at the same speeds I burn games at?

Hey davv111, the majority of us use 4x.With the higher quality media,8x should be no trouble.
It's those stand alone players that those movie backups will play on that will tell you the speed.Some of them will give you: pixellation,freezing,jumping,and no disc inserted errors. The slower speed helps on those issues.

I'm a 2X or 4X man myself. Slow but sure and it works every time :)

4x here, too, although I have burned some at 8x with no problems. The time I saved was not that great, so I went back to the sure and steady 4x.

Guess I've got to be different, I split the difference and burn 8x media at 6x whenever allowed.

It depends on the burner - I use the Lite-On 802, and I have updated the firmware with the 812S firmware.
At 8X I was making the occasional coaster, but then I read a report that there could be problems at the end of a recording, so it suggested some firmware tweaks that slow the recording down toward the end.
Since then I've been cruising at 8X with no problems. Google "[My DVD Recorder Model] Firmware" and check that you have the most up-to-date.

Yea 4x is the way to go.Nice and slow but fairly fast..10min to burn a 90min movie is pretty fast...

I always use 8x; however, i am using yudens and have never had a coaster with those. Every player i have used plays them perfectly and i ahve backed up over 230 movies now. Backing up flight of the pheonix as we speak.

Yea I use MAX with my NEC drives they seem just to burn better..But then again that's what I think...

I used to burn religously at 8X with my Memorex dual layer burner, but was soon having problems. (Crappy media) I've since switched to a NEC 3450A and I burn only at 6X, never higher. When I burned at 8X, my movie would pixelate or skip a few times. Not all the time, but why would I keep chancing it. For the extra 3 minutes, I don't have to worry anymore.

It matters. If your burner isn't completely crap and you have good media, you can burn at 8x. I burn at 16x sometimes, and it runs fine, never a problem. The chance isn't owrth the 4 minutes tho. 8 minutes to burn at 8x, sounds good to me. Always perfect, use good media such as Riteks, Verbatim or Yudens. Be careful with fake brands tho, can cause more problems than it's worth for money.
