I tried just writing on them but my penmanship is lacking and if I use those full labels the end up jamming in my cd player. Any suggestions?

The stick on labels can cause problems on burned dvds (do a search & you'll countless horror stories). Look for a printer that prints directly on special dvd's (the epson r200, r300, etc. are the only one's sold in the US I believe). They are fairly inexpensive & have great results without all the hassles that labeling can bring. I have the r200 & love it!

Before you use various "stick on" labels you might want to check out this thread.

I have to say that although this would require purchasing a new burner and fairly expensive media, I absolutely love my new HP 640I DVD Writer with LightScribe technology. It uses the burners laser to create a "burned" image on the label side of the disk. Go to http://www.lightscribe.com for more info. The burner only costs $99 and it can do all media including DL disks. The media is fairly inexpensive when you consider what they are capable of and the companies that produce them. I currently purchase Verbatims for the specific reason they are fairly good for DVD backups. The technology has just been released, and disks are hard to find at the moment, but the results are GREAT!!! I can't stress enough how nice it looks... Check out the website... That is just my two cents! Good Luck Friend!

I have the Epson 320 does a great job - as long as you have a good scanned image you almost can't tell the difference between the backup and the original. Before that I used Fellows labels and have never had a problem playing them, copying them in any of my DVD players. I've watched movies recently I backed up about a year ago with pasted labels - no problems.

It's hard to find the specially coated discs for Hewlett-Packard 640i! Besides that, I read that it curently etches at a sluggish 1x speed (a firmware update to 2x is in the works). But that still means that simple labels will take up to 5 minutes and more complex graphics can take up to 30 minutes. Maybe a sharpie is better...
