can anyone figure this out? i went through an entire package of 10 disks. are they all screwed now? is there a way to format these things? when i try to erase them it kicks the disk out before it's got to the end.

You need to enable DMA mode, you are probably in PIO mode. Go to Device Manager and under IDE controllers see if you are in DMA.

You might want to edit out your Nero serial number.
It starts with 1A25-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

Someone can steal it.

Bardie is right on the ball:
If Nero gives you something around 6 burn errors in a row, It will automatically put your ide controllers on pio mode. This is a safety. You need to be in dma mode to be able to burn. Notice all 3 of your drives on the scsi map says dma-off.

Go into device manager, hardware, then get to the primary ide controller,un-install and reboot. Do the same with the secondary ide controller-un-install, and reboot. That should set them back to dma if available. Then you can try burning again.. Let us know how it works out for you.

Stick with the rw's till you get her straightened out and good luck

You see none of your drives are in DMA mode you need to switch them
Here is a link if you need a guide on showing you how to do this. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/DMA.html

thanks gents/ladies ..as the case may be.... i noticed that myself once i looked at the log, and i tried all that stuff. it didn't work. i have uninstalled and reinstalled, checked to see if dma is enabled, rebooted, and viola...same crud....what i don't get is why it burns a cd-rw just fine.

CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can revert to using PIO mode, despite being set to use "DMA if Available." Here's how to make Windows XP redetect the DMA capabilities of the drives.
This behaviour occurs with the following conditions:

-Windows XP is the operating system
-A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, which is known to support DMA mode now works only in PIO mode.
-The drive controller is set to use "DMA if available" but reports to be only in PIO mode.

Following is the mechanism that has worked for me, please try it at your own risk, it involves hacking the registry:

1. Open RegEdit
2. Find the following KEY:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x
3. The last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on.
4. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values:
MasterIdDataChecksum
SlaveIdDataChecksum
5. Reboot the computer. Windows will now redetect DMA settings.

hi again. as you can see from this log dma's are all on.
but it still fails at 2x. maybe i'm burning in an incorrect mode. i want to burn some about 6 movies. i am not trying to burn them as iso's, but that is the only option. is this the problem? i tried burning as data, that didn;t work either...here's the log:

I would try uninstalling all of your software, and then just pick one that will burn and load it. Then try your burn again. There may be something conflicting there. Do you have InCD loaded with Nero if so that could be the problem also. You can go to Nero website and download all the clean tools and use them to make sure Nero is completly removed from your system. Could also be your writer has just had it? Do you have another system you could try it in to rule out that possibility?

thanks for your continuing efforts to help. i have the cleaning tool. and yes i've tried eliminating incd... with no change in behavior. i now have uninstalled Nero. i did find remnants of roxio excd in my registry which i also cleaned out. in my frustration, i'd forgotten that i had bid on a sony 710a on ebay...until i got an email telling me that i was the proud owner of a bouncing baby sony burner. having said that, it will still be weeks before i receive it being as i'm in ednonton canada and it's coming from florida. so as you suggested...now begins the process of elimination. i reiterate...it can't be the burner if it is still burning cd-rw smooth as silk.

I would tend to disagree with that as burning of a CD and DVD are 2 completly different process's and use different methods to create the disk.
DVD technology writes in smaller "pits" to the recordable media than CD technology. Smaller pits mean that the drive's laser must produce a smaller spot. DVD technology achieves this by reducing the laser's wavelength from the 780nm infrared light used in standard CD drives to 625nm to 650nm red light.
These narrow tracks require special lasers for reading and writing ? which can't read CD-ROMs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, or audio CDs. DVD-ROM drive makers solved the problem by putting two lasers in their drives: One for DVDs, the other for CDs

So you see one laser will work and the other may not..

wow! i didn't know that! i learned something today. i have a new glitch to report. i've been tinkering in the registry. i have turned off xp's burning software since learning that it is a roxio manifestation and roxio and Nero do not work and play well together. and i have done a fresh install of xp.now i have new issues. d:\drive not accessible, incorrect function. also when i fire up recordnow, it says: "no recorder"

i have reinstalled Nero. and the log says my dma's are off. when i check my disks it looks like every time i do a burn it's writing info which subsequently is not erased....when i engage nerotool, the tool shows capacity at 4.3 gb when it should be 4.7, as well when i erase, it spits it out saying it has completed the erase.... i think my 'puter is not recognizing the disks. is it possible that after multiple attempts at burning they become toasters?

Alot of people wonder why there 4.7GB discs only write 4.38GB at maximum capacity. There is nothing wrong with your disk, but just and industry standard of calculating gigabytes. To be frank there way is incorrect because it actually takes 1024 bytes to make a full MB, yet the industry uses 1000? Go figure.. 4.7 GB discs = 4.38 GB or 4489 MB for DVD-R and 4483 MB for DVD+R.
