Is there a free or shareware application that will add encryption to a copy?
As we all know, encryption is easy to break.
What I am looking for is to protect copies of work from the basic user.
What should I, if I can, use?

I'll try and be more clear.
Commercial copies of DVDs have encryption on them.
Shrink, Decrypter and AnyDVD are tools to get past these encryptions... which users of afterdawn are aware of and the average computer user is not.
Is there a piece of share or freeware that could put encryption upon a copy I had made, preventing that copy from being further copied by the average computer user (without the sort of specialist applications mentioned)?

I am not looking to make it unreadable.
I am looking to make it, at least by the average user, uncopyable.
Part of my last message must have been cut off. Here is the relevant piece:
Is there a piece of share or freeware that could put encryption upon a copy I had made, preventing that copy from being further copied by the average computer user (without the sort of specialist applications mentioned)?

I have answered this a few times so I hope this helps. Some of the new stand alone recorders are adding copy protection to everything it records on dvd, even home movies. Do a search for CPRM(Copy Protection for Recorded Media). One of the units is a LG RC6821w. I think thats the right model. So if you really need to encrypt a dvd recording you will need to buy one of these type recorders. When this first came up, none of the normal decrypting programs would cut through this protection. Its been a while so I don't know if the new versions of Decrypter or Anydvd can break it or not. Hope this helps.

You can also use some sand paper on the data side of this disk. That would make sure no one can ever read it !!!

I am looking for software.
I seek a piece of free or shareware that can render a copy upcopyable to the average computer user, unaware of the sort of software available on this site.

You will not be able to make any disk un-copyable! If you could don't you think Sony, Colubia, HBO, Fox ect.. would have figured that out by now? I guess my question would be why bother if someone wants to copy it they are going to copy it.

I am looking for a piece of share / freeware that allows a copy to be read and played but renders it uncopyable to the basic user, the sort who has Nero but is unaware of the sort of software available on this site.

I don't think there is ANY software to add encryption. Thats why I listed CPRM. Its about the only way I know of to do what you want. Like I said this isn't the first time this has been asked. I don't think you will find software to do it.

It seems as though I have been misread a few times, so here is an example:
Ulead's DVD Workshop 2

"Copy Protection: Add copyright protection to your DVD titles with Macrovision and CSS options."
We all realise how fragile this is but, as I have repeated, I am seeking to do what is possible and protect my output from duplication by the average user.
I have used this software before and it's both intuitive and powerful but... expensive ($395.00), though the evaluation lasts 30 days, which is the reason I am seeking something more affordable.
Does anyone know of something that can do the same, at a more affordable (free-/share-/adware) price?

I'm sorry but who are you protecting it from and why? The average user knows how to copy a DVD and if they don't they will figure it out pretty easy by doing a Google at which point they will end up here at AD. Seems like a lot of heart ache for nothing. If you dont want somebody copying your disk's just dont give it to them.

This is not the sort of person who will be too bothered about overcoming simple encryption!

Rhetoric and sarcasm are the domain of some on afterdawn, though most are able and helpful and it is their help I seek.
Jerry746 is a prime example.
I would not ask about protecting copies if I did not need to protect copies. It is because I am required to distribute copies of my work in such an electronic manner that I ask. I trust my classmates, though I cannot legislate for where those copies will end up.
Hence the question (to someone constructive):
With reference to Ulead's "DVD Workshop 2" and its "Copy Protection" features, does anyone know of something that can do the same, at a more affordable (free-/share-/adware) price?

An obvious and redundant statement, in the context of my request.
Mr Fool is of no concern. Neither is Mr Expert, though for opposed reasons!
Mr Average is the only person with whom I am concerned.
