Hello, I am new to all this. I would like to back-up DVDs that I own to one of the formats that uses standard CDs, but which one? What are the merits and problems of the various formats? Is there a table of comparison where I can read up on each and decide which is best for my needs? Thanks.

VCD
MPEG1
1 movie is usually 2 CDs
Pros:
Can play on stand alones
Cons:
I personally don't like watching it on my computer due to quality

SVCD
MPEG2 same format as DVD
1 movie will be usually be 3 CDs
Pros:
Better quality than than VCD
Cons:
Takes up more space

DIVX
Based on MPEG4
Movies usually range from 400mb to a couple of hundred mb over 1gb
Pros:
DVD quality - great on computer screens
Smaller file sizes than the above formats
Cons:
Can't play on stand alones

If you want quality DIVx is goingto be your choice, big problem is that those CD's are not goig to work on stand alone DVD players. If you can grab a DVD-R/RW burner I suggest you to give a try to DVDXCopy. Really a great software that makes 100 % perfect backpus of your DVDs (with extras, multi languaje and all the cool stuff from the original movie)

Thanks a bunch for the information.

I hear there is a stand-alone DVD player made by KiSS that can play DivX encoded disks. Anyone have any info on the thing?
If they are doing it, hopefully, some of the more mainstream (Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC) manufacturers may as well.

Anyway, DivX it shall be. I've downloaded all the recommended tools, now to give it a try!

Thanks a bunch for all the great info, if it weren't for you guys, I would be up the creek with vcd, not that i have a dvd player. Here's why, I have a tv out on my new geforce card. Through that i watch Divx via cd on my television. A friend of mine watches the same anywhere in his house. He disconnects tv cable from his room where it joins with the main cable that comes into the house. He then makes the cable in his room the feed to the rest of the house. Then he hooks up his tv out to his tv cable in his room and boom, he's feeding all the tvs in the house with his tv out. I dont know what kind of stress this puts on his card, but it's food for thought.

The thing about TV signal from your video card is that it just sends out a small signal which is transferred through to the other devices reading the info from it. There is no extra stress caused, they all just patch in and decode the signal. It's the same for audio, by the way.
