chipped xbox wont play orginals

This might sound a bit daft BUT,,,,,,,,,
chipped xbox with X2.6 , 120 gig hardrive,phillips dvd drive and it wont play originals wont even boot the game ,but will play my backups with no problem and dvd film's , whats going on there then?

i have run outta hankies if you any spare id be so happy.
forgot to mention it used to play originals with chip in but about a year onwards it wont now!!
Was thinking of maybe cleaning lens may be that the trick ( doubt it ). Also if i did change disc drive is it a case of just a straight swop ?
