xbox compatible with off-the-shelf dvd-rom drives?

I was wondering if Xbox is compatible with regular dvd-rom drives such as you would find in a pc. I was thinking this could be useful as newer drives have better firmware, compatibility with dvd/cd media etc. Any info would be great.

yes you can use a regular dvd drive in you xbox..but it will not be able to play originals only backups

The Samsung 616T with firmware upgrade will play everything. It requires some cutting&filing on the xbox to fit inside, tho. I see them on eBay all the time.
