4x dvd-r, or your burner might not support 1x writing.

Your write speed should have nothing to do with the discs, it's the burner and the burning program that usually decide that.
You want to use 4X or 8X discs for PS2 games anyway, and make sure they are goo quality like Phillips, TDK or Ritec(hope i speled that one right).
My burner always does 3.8X speed no matter what i set my DVD Decrypter at, which i always set at 1X
But since it always works i don't question it.
