backing up games using +r and -r

I have a version 4 ps2 and i can use +r's fine.
My friend has a v7 ps2, and when he backs up his games using +r's, they tend to load very slowly and at times dont work. I used his discs on my ps2 and they worked perfectly, yet they still didnt work on his. My first question is-- can the +r play a factor in not working on his v7 and working on my v4? Would -r's possibly solve the problem? Also, i use SwapMagic 3.3 and he uses 2.0. Can that make a difference?

His should play both formats, older versions won't, they only play -R. Tell him to slow his burn speeds down to 1x, that'll probably clear up his problems.
