This is DVDinfo with a TY 8x disc.

Free Capacity 4.38GB(4.71GB)
Book Type DVD-R
Media Type DVD-R
Manufacturer Rated Speed 8.0x 11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 16.0x 22160KBps

Why does it say I can burn this 8x disc at 12 or 16x? That can't be right is it? Has anyone burned this disc (successfully without making a coaster) faster than 8x? If so then what were your results?

This is actually pretty common for certain combinations of burners and media. I tested about half of the first 50 pack of 8x -r TY media I bought at 16x, and they all burned flawlessly, not a sector amiss. I still only burn at 8x, just cause even with the decent specs my pc has, it still had trouble keeping the buffers filled with DVDD.

Why not try a few out yourself, test them for crc errors, and come to your own conclusions.

OK. I'll test burn one at 16x & another at 8x (with my Plextor 716a drive) then check out the errors if any. Like you my thought is a top speed of 8x. Thats fast enough for me.

You know whats really strange? I was given some old Imation DVD-R's (2x speed Ritek G03's bought 8 months ago) & they burned fine at 4x with no errors. Normally I wouldn't do that but my Plextor's lowest burn speed seems to be 4x.

Ok, someone explain this. I picked from Fry's their GQ brand on special 8x DVD-R. The DVDinfo said:

Track Density 0.74um/track

The manufacturer ID is the same but the specs are just the opposite. What good is an 8x rated speed when no burner software (that I know) can actually use it - no write descriptor.

It might (?) be fake Taiyo Yuden media that Fry's decided to use because of price. If you want to keep these discs then I'd suggest you burn them at 4x or (even better) 2x speed...
