Hi i am new to backing up dvd's, i have bought dvd-r x4 should i still burn at x2 or at x4.I can remember reading it is still better to burn at the slower time, please advise thanks.

4x SHOULD be fine... although 2x wont hurt either...
if the dvd-rs arent top quality (good ritecks, TY, MCC etc) then 2x might be better...

Hello, I burn @ 4x and I have never had any problems. Any faster then that is when I have gotten disk errors.

i use 4x even on Verbatim datalifeplus 8x media and a fast decent machine. BUT everyone to their own, but when a 4GB of data takes me 15mins to write to a disk, i dont care if there are 16x burners/media. Only if the whole dvd writing game was 1000% reliable would i use higher speeds

i agree with creaky, just like the old CD-R days, audio corrupted at higher than 2x as well as ps2 (when the lasers were going out....)

If you are using quality grade media then the faster speeds work fine. It's when you are using the lower (elcheapo) media you will run into problems burning at higher speeds. It really has nothing to do with your system or burner it all falls onto the DVD media you are using... I have burned @ 2, 4, and x8 speeds and ran all the disks threw exstinsive testing (mainly with Nero CD/DVD speed) and the results were identical with each disk (Taiyo Yudens) Then foe sheets and giggles I got my hands on some of those unfavorable disks (Memorsux's) I ran the same test and my GOD! what a difference from 2 to 8 was crazy infact the x8 ones were so bad that they wouldnt even play.. So you buy good quality media that will also last and burn as fast as your burner and media will allow or you can play it safe and keep the burning down to x4. I would suggest to everyone try it out for themselves some will be fine at higher speeds and some are going to have problems, but what have ya got to lose anyway .30c for the disk I suppose.. :-)

El cheapo/generic media-2x or lower: if they even work at all.
Good quality media: 4x
High quality media-4x to start with and work your way up to 8x and above if you have no playback issues.
I stick with the 4x eventhough most of my +8x media will allow me to burn 12x and 16x.
Your stand alone players will tell you how fast to burn them. Too fast and they will pixellate,freeze,jump, and many other numerous problems, Particularly the poor-cheapo- crappo-generico- media.That cheapo crap backups will have a lot harder time to play in standalones. Stick with the good media,less problems.

The Memorex media sucks but they have 16x Dual Layer Burner that is #1 right now according to my PC Mag. I looked at all of the reviews and to my surprise they were pretty good so I ended up buying it and I haven't been dissapointed.... Then of course I don't use their crappy media that fails about half of the time, I use Professional grade media like Taiyo-Yuden, Maxell, and Ridata.

If thats the case it doesnt matter what speed they are burning at it isn't going to work very good... So you see I don't really agree with you either, but hey thats allowed right?? :-) Point is if there system isn't set up properly in all the ways you have mentioned then I would tend to believe they are going to have problems regardless. I have been building and working on computers for 14 years now and it has always been my rule of thumb in this buiseness no matter what it is to stay one step behind technology.. I will explain.. Now that DVD speeds are up to 16x then I would bet that it is safe to burn at 8x (with the right media) It probably isn't to smart to burn at 16x because all the bugs haven't been worked out yet. The same was true with CD writers years ago.. Wow I just thought about that I remember when I had my first CD burner x1 Yamaha dang I'm gettin friggen old LOL... Anyway unless you are having major issues with you system there is no reason you shouldnt be able to burn at the speed the drive was designed for. Now if you do have issues like most the joe public's out there then you are going to have problems no matter what speed you are burning at.. If you cant get a decent copy burning faster then try changing to some good media and think you would be surprised.. :-)

higher speeds would be worth trying if they got v good media. Its just that people who dont know or care too much about how a pc works, might get 'burnt' by crappy media etc. No pun intended :)

OK this is gettin a little out of hand now... I didnt suggest that everyone burn at the highest speed possible.. In fact the only person I was addressing my statement to was the original poster cabmanuk I dont believe that qualifies as everyone? cabmanuk has a x4 burner of course there will be no problems with that speed (that is now the norm) I can remember not to long ago when x4 first came out everyone was staying at x1 or x2 to be safe... So when will everyone start moving up to x8?? When you say it is good to now? I'm not trying to be a smart arse, but you really don't understand my point, and I'm afraid I don't get yours.. Heres mine again plain and simple... The speed of the burn has absolutly nothing to do with the finished product as long as the media support's that speed. Now if you are getting errors during the burning process then by all means slow it down, but if you can burn a disk at x8 without a hitch you will see that the finished disk will look no different than one burned at x4 or x2.. All I suggested was to try it out and see the media isnt that darn expensive if you waste one trying...

If you gave me something that would actually have to do with the effect of burning slower produces better copies then I might agree, but everything you have wrote is for sure going to cause problems even if they were burning at x1 speed... Thats why I say it all depends on the media..

Hi there,
I have decided to try InterVideo DvdCopy3.
Seems like an awsome software, but again, like DvdXCopy Platinum, I see no place to select burn speed :(
Click on burn and it starts burning.
I guess it burned it a MAX Speed.
It's burning now, so I will keep you posted.
I want to burn at 4x with this BenQ DW1620 else I expect problems with my DVD Players...

I think it wrote to this DVD-R at high speed, and no player in the house will play more than 2 minutes without major freezing. You should see the burn, it's ugly as hell. All full of lines, I guess when the burner stopped to refill the buffer...
Now if I can just find the hell how to stop Nero v6.6.0.8 from trying to change the bitsetting on my DVD-R this drive (BenQ DW1620) might make me happy...

Here is probably your biggest problem that stands out !!

Thats one of the worst media out there it ranks right there with Memorex...
Have you updated your firmware for that drive? That could help your situation... Replacing the media with some quality media would help the most though..

i burn my dvd's at 8x on extremely cheap dvd+r's ($5 for a 40 pack of Teons) and i havnt had any disk read errors, does it just give disk read errors or does it kill the quality too? i dont think i have ever burned a dvd+r at less than 8X, because these are my first disks and i havnt had a problem yet!

This is a truly fundamental 'newbie' question, given that I have been editing and burning video successfully for some time, using a hp 300n, Video Shrink, DVD Decrypter, TMPGen and now, thanks to a multitude of good advice here, have switched over to Taiyo-Yuden (50 T02s just arrived), though previously Maxwell and yes, the even dreaded Memorex produced results that looked good. My question is this: Since the T-Ys are 8X, I thought I would try a higher speed than what seems to be the default 2X. Searching all over the place, I can't see where I alter the burn setting. Obviously I am missing something.

If you are using DVD Decrypter in the ISO write mode, then the burn speed is set at the lower right corner of the program.

Idon't know if this will help at all but you may want to look at this..Decrypter in iso write mode:
There is a small "book" icon to the right of the speed setting menu that opens the book type setting window. If your drive is listed, you can change the book type to the type of media you are using. I do not know if these changes will stay where you set them when switching programs...

Thanks to Fasfrank and DVD Decrypter for providing me with some answers and a welcome laugh. Being a recovering analog kind of guy, it hadn't occurred to me that burn speed settings would be external to the hardware here at home. I had overlooked the Decrypter setting, since it just said 'Max.' So I learned something. And then, when I clicked on the previously overlooked book icon, I didn't find my hp 300n, but did get the message: "If you don't know what you're doing, just click OK." I loudly laughed. Wonder if TMPGEN has something similar.
