may sound stupid but what is good media to use to back up dvd games.

I've had perfect burns with Ridata from Ritek...mine are even 8x DVD+R. I, like you had to research when I first started backups, and this is what was recommended to me everywhere I looked.

I use Taiyo Yuden. They are a little bit more $ than Ritec but I read they are rated better. I have not had a coster in months. Even Star Wars Battlefront worked with the TY's. Good luck
