Help ME NOTHING WORKS

I have a Hauppauge PVR 250 and besides the software that came with it (ULEAD DVD FACTORY) Nothing works. I try using Nero for capturing from VHS to DVD and get errors about the device not being detected.

I try using VirtualDub Nothing. I get an error that tells me to close the programs like WinTV and DVD. I have NONE of this running.

I would like to know what a Codec is too and all this talk about WDM and WFV are confusing could someone please tell me why I cannot use any other capturing program.
