I have no idea what I'm doing. I had a new computer build for me last fall, and I decided to get a DVD burner. Trouble is, I have no idea how to use it. I've downloaded some movies off the internet but when I did some research about burning them, I can't seem to get a really clear picture of what I should be doing.

Honestly, I've probably put about 10 hours of research into this and have had several failed attempts at doing ANYTHING. I figured it's time to ask some questions.

Here are my system components:
SONY DVD RW DRU-530A Dual Format Drive
~ 300GB Memory
2.05 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Windows XP

I have downloaded:
DVD Decoder
DVD Shrink
IFOEdit
AviCodec
Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn 2
TMPGEnc

I have:
Nero Express 5.5
PowerDVD
Ulead Video Studios

Now I understand (obviously) that I don't need all of these, they have just accumulated after trying several different pieces of advice.

Can someone please help me understand where to go from here?

PS. I am not totally computer illiterate. This is just going way over my head for some reason.

Thank-you.

Sorry, I guess that would help.

They're all listed as Winamp media files, although that's just because that's my default player. They're all in DIVX codec.

I'm trying to burn downloaded dvds into playable DVD format.

Hope that helps!

Once again I'm new at this, but nothing needs to be converted?

Another silly question, but I'm using a DVD+RW disc. This is what's called for by my writer, but is this the correct media target?

Avi files generally need to be converted to an mpeg 2 compatible format before you can burn them to dvd and then watch them on your standalone dvd player.

As an alternative why not try divx to dvd : below is a link to a guide that may assist you.

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/convert_avi_to_dvd.cfm

and heres a link to the software:

Hi Chlamb.

I was just like you and I've gotten so much assistance from this forums that it enabled to create my very own DVD-video discs.

I used several programs and I've had no problem whatsoever (with subtitles if you like)

1) VSO_Divx2DVD <---- to transform those AVI's to DVD format (remark: if you do not plan to add subtitles, then this is the end. You can burn the compilation with Nero)
2) VobEdit <--- to transform all those IFO, VOB & BUP onto MPG2 and AC3 files
3) Subtitle workshop <--- to transform and modify the subs onto some format (SRT) recognized by the DVD
4) srt2SUP <--- to transform the SRT format onto SUP format (the one DVD recognizes)
5) IFOEdit <--- to transform the MPG2 & AC3 again onto VOB, IFO & SUP (the format that DVD-video reads)

And that's it. It only took me maximum 3 hours to do so.

Alas, it's possible!!

there is no need to do all that

i keep saying,if you have Nero,....use it
it is virtually done in a couple of clicks(apart from the transcoding) time
you can add menus etc etc with NVE

Orrrr.............

I'm only wishing to get the main movie. None of the extra's. No deleted scenes, alternate endings, yadda yadda yadda. Only the movie

I'm Using DVD Decrypter 3.5.2.0. Go to Tools on the top, and select settings.

Now, go to mode and select "File F", your DVD Will Load up. Look to the right after it loaded up and you will see the DVD has loaded. Look for a file titles "IFO" and right below it you will see "VOB" files that equal too about 4 gigs if you select them all. Select the IFO and VOB files.

Something like this

VTS_01_0.IFO [ XX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_0.VOB [ X,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_1.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_2.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_3.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_4.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_02_0.BUP [ XXX,XXX KB]<-----DO NOT SELECT
See how i selected the IFO and the VOB's, but NOT the BUP. Some movies will have MORE VOB's to select, or LESS VOB's to select. All depends on the movie. The BUP Follows the LAST VOB. Once again, do NOT select ANY VOB's. Now here's the confusing part. SOME movies have Widescreen AND Fullscreen on a one sided DVD. You will see TWO sets of the top Diagram. Here is what I do if this happens, On the top left of the program go to Edit and Select Main Movie Files. THIS will for SURE select the movie. If you have ANY doubts, do it like that. After doing that, it will look like this:

VTS_01_0.IFO [ XX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_0.VOB [ X,XXX KB]<----UN-SELECTED***
VTS_01_1.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_2.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_3.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
VTS_01_4.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Select
\par
I have no clue why it selects everything but the FIRST VOB. Just go back and click on IFO and drag it down to the last VOB to get this again. Remember, do NOT select the BUP file, or it will mess everything up that follows from here.

VTS_01_0.IFO [ XX KB]<----Selected
VTS_01_0.VOB [ X,XXX KB]<----Selected
VTS_01_1.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Selected
VTS_01_2.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Selected
VTS_01_3.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Selected
VTS_01_4.VOB [ X,XXX,XXX KB]<----Selected

On the left side you will see "Destination", and press the little folder option "Please Select A Folder...", Select the destination of where the movie will be. Make a folder, Name it "DECRYPTER". In that folder, make another folder with the movie title(Lets call this movie "ABCDEFG"(Remember, the movie ABCDEFG is in the DECRYPTER folder).

Let the program work its magic, while its putting the movie onto your hard drive. After its done, just eject the DVD from your DVD Rom and move on to DVD Shrink.

I/O Settings:
Check RPC2 Driven Region Code When Opening A DVD
**Burn Settings
Enable Burning With Nero**(ONLY USE THIS IF YOU HAVE Nero BURNING ROM 6.0 OR UP INSTALLED)

Now that all the setting have been set, Make sure you make a folder. Name it what ever you want. Since the folder were getting our movie from after we are done with DVD Decrypter, lets name this "ABCDEFG2". THIS folder is where you will put the movie in AFTER we get done with DVD Shrink. Now, lets get started. Open DVD Shrink and click the "Re-Author" tab. Underneath the "Hard DIsk Drive(s)", select the "ABCDEFG" folder(the one you used DVD Shrink to put into).

See the "Main Movie" list, and Title 1, select that(every once in a while, there will be title 1 and title 2. Difference between it is different camera angles. I always select "1"). Double Click Title 1 and it will go into its anylizing phase. After its done anylizing, see the "Compression Settings" and the "DVD Browser" tabs? Select the "Compression Settings". This is where you can get rid of different audio(language), and Sub Pictures(Closed Captions). Best bet is to get rid of ALL Closed Captions(unless your deaf), and only have EVERY ENGLISH checked. Un-check different languages, unless you want the movie to be in that language where you can select different languages on you DVD Player. REMEMBER=only have ENGLISH checked.

NOW, on the top bar select "Back Up", a screen will pop up and under the "Select Target Folder For DVD Output Files:" put the movie in "ABCDEFG2" Folder. Make sure you have "Create VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS Subfolders" UN-CHECKED. Now, press OK and the program will do its thing.

AUTHORING THE DVD

Get a DVD Burning program, such as Easy DVD Creator, Nero 6.0.0.0+, or what ever program you have to burn DVD's, and select the "ABCDEFG2" folder. THATS where your movie is in. After your done with burning(authoring) the movie, make sure you delete "ABCDEFG" and "ABCDERF2" folders. Just wasted Hard drive space.

I know you might think its all over whelming, but in the end, IMHO, its worth it.

@ChLamb

Have you been able to create a DVD yet? If you still need assistance then chck out my website (signature in link) there is a guide there showing you how to use NVE, and one called "Convert AVI to DVD" either one will work for you. The second of the two is probablly a little easier and the programs are free..
Quote:

Yes your files do need converted. Unless you have a DVD player that will play any video format out there. If that were the case you could just burn your files to the DVD as data and be done with it.

Not true that writer will use DVD -+R/RW.

iv also been having problems with Nero, it is usually real easy to use but iv had a couple movies that it wouldnt do, for instance everyone of my rocky movies wouldnt work Nero kept telling me they werent video files, so i used divx to dvd for the transcoding then just burned the file it created using Nero. another problem i found was that with some movies Nero stopped working whilst transcoding i think this was due to errors in the files i was trying to write, in this situation divx to dvd would do it but there was an audio lag with the finished product.

The only downside i have found with divx to dvd is the quality of the movie they are not quite as good as with Nero but it transcodes 3 times quicker than Nero so what can ya expect.

Wow, I am so amazed at all the help!

Thanks to bbmayo's website I managed to convert my DIVX to DVD and then I used DVD Shrink to back them up, and then I burned them with Nero.

Do they need to be backed up with DVD Shrink? I don't really do anything with those files, it's the ones from DIVX to DVD that I burn, correct?

My DVD+RW discs worked in my DVD player, so it seems to be working in that respect.

I've managed to write to DVDs now, no pro yet but definitely better off than I was yesterday!

Hursty, I don't have Nero Vision, just Nero. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I definitely can't just write the .AVI files, I've tried several times.

I have a whole bunch of shorter episodes that I'd like to write to DVD, but how do I create a menu so that you can select which one you want to watch when you put in the DVD? I have an idea this is going to be a large learning curve, but I'm ready!

No you don't need to use Shrink if the files are small enough to fit on a disk.. Did you actually read the guide? Or dod you just look at the pictures? LOL :-)
Quote:

Well you can look at my site again and follow the guide on using NVE... Or look at the Convert AVI to DVD guide again in that guide it is actually showing me do to seperate files at once (of course you could do as many as you like :-) With that method you wouldn't have menus, but your DVD remote has a button called "Title(s)" on it. you can press that button to sip through the episodes. If you have to have the menus though then use the NVE guide :-)
