I have some brief questions regarding the difference (or lack there of) between the +R and -R formats. The afterdawn glossary states:
DVD-R is technically slightly less advanced than its competitor, DVD+R.

So if DVD-R is less advanced, do people use it more for compatability issues on stand alone DVD players or XBOX/Playstation 2? It appears to be no more than a penny or two cheaper than DVD+R so it cannot be a cost issue can it? The current DVD recordable drive market supports both formats + and - , so why do people still recommend - ? Finally, if and when I get enough cash together to get some DVD-RW/DVD+RW what recommendations + vs. - can you leave me with. Thanks again.

more standalone machines are compatabill with the dvd - media, there is also a larger choice of - media around,i have used both types and although both do work i find the - stuff easier to get and more playable as my warfedale dvd player doesnt seem to like most + brands but is ok with most - brands.the best brands to go for are the discs using the TYG02 or MCC 003 dyes or for a slightly cheaper option but still good dye try ritek, check this thread

also its a good idea to keep burn speed to 4x,ortherwise you may encounter errors

The only advantage that DVD-Rs supposedly holds over DVD+Rs is one that the DVD-RW alliance touts - that -Rs have better compatibility over +Rs. But if you have a DVD player less than 5 years old, that argument is a non-issue. DVD+Rs are just as compatible, and are cheaper and can burn at faster speeds. If you can do bitsetting on your PC burner, you can even give DVD+Rs the same booktype of DVD-ROM as what PS2 games have when you buy them from the store. If you can burn either -Rs or +Rs, go with the cheaper one by price.
BTW, you can buy a 100-pack of Ritek Ridata DVD+RWs for $30 after a $12 rebate at Newegg (shipping free right now). They are manufactured by RICOH so they should be pretty decent media. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-382&depa=0

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. I tried (and failled) to understand all the advanced physical concepts in the article by Michael Spath. However I think I got the jist of it and will keep it in mind. While checking out afterdawn regarding the media code TYG02 two things came up, Fake Media and a distinct lack of +R media with it.
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd-r_media_report.cfm

I am going to check out http://www.videohelp.com
and see if I can track down some MCC 003 dyes in a + format before I give up and risk Fake Taiyo Yudens.

P.S. Many thanks to the forum folks who saved me from buying a 100 pack of CompUSA coasters with their experience and knowledge.

Amazon has Verbatim 100pc 8X DVD+/-Rs for $30 after $30 rebate (no tax, free shipping). The DVD+Rs are most definitely genuine MCC003, whereas the DVD-Rs are MCC002. You can also check this list, but it's not perfect: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431
