Programming can be easy depending on the project I would assume.Of course a small task would be easy right, but we are dealing with a big task.If you know how to program it would help you determine code,be more familiar with the code.Dissassembling the code is different, even advance programmers have a rough time messing with this kind of code. You all know the tables are encrypted right, this still hasn't been accomplished yet.If it was accomplished we would be able to extract from the .VOL files the true files. My point is no a couple classes in programming will not cut it,because you still have to get familiar with game developers code. That I think has to be either learned on your own or either taught by someone that has knowledge on the subject. It doesn't hurt to take programming classes though,in fact any class you take will benefit you at some point.Decyphering code can't be an easy task look at the advanced programmers that have been messing with this game, even they are struggling.

If programming isn't so hard, why are we still waiting for a patch? Because, unfortunately, not too many programmers are cryptologists. Sorry! Not all of us are able to crack encryption.

This has a lot less to do with programming, than it does with CRACKING the game. Oh, and Sharky, someone's (I forget who) ordered some sort of IDE from Actel, to try to figure out what algorithm(s) Team Toxic is using to crack the DVD9 protection.

im not sure if anyone cares for this reply...but i hav a copy of gt4 fully working....no i did not burn it myself...nor hav i gotten it off net....funny story...here goes.

i went on a 6 week trip to india...last few days there i went into an underground market...they basically sold pirited stuff, vcds, burned games, stolen dvds, you name it... i got like atleast 20 or so burned games but damn the detail but into them was great. original looking cases, the disks had the labels and pictures, all except the manuals. and yes they were all burned, as they didnt work on my friends ps2, which is not modded, mines is. so thats a kicker, gt4 from india works...i thought i would never see the day, and know its not in hindi all my games are in english...

i checked the game size...4.6 gb im guessing stuff was deleted, mayb online files or movies...not sure...

hope sum1 can make my post out, i just hate grammer :P

umm actually i hav a question....actually a very stupid question...i just wanna get it out so here goes.

To my understanding the PlayStation 2 is like a mini computer, it has its own ports, hdd, usb ports for a mouse and keyboard, net capability, even able to connect to your home pc. So here is my question, is it not possible to somehow, get gt4 loaded onto the hdd, (40gb one included with FFXI), and maybe make some program that can load it? I'm just asking, I'm not a computer whiz so I wouldn't know. I'm just blabbing away.

Gear pro mastering edition 7 seems to have an awful lot of settings that may be useful.
1.Burn in ptp/otp
2.D/Layer support
3.Set layer break.
4.Booktype
5.A whole lot of other settings I haven't got a clue about!!
It's a 24 meg download and you can use for 60 days before it expires.
IF the recording is set to ptp, layer break is in the right place, and any other settings that may need to be implemented would this programme maybe give us half a chance?

I think it's funny how people always come out with the "I'm a professional programmer" or the "I know a programmer" bit to try to sound more valid.
Really, I go to Michigan Tech as a Computer Science major and I don't know jack about programing for DVD burrning software. It's not like they teach you to program specificly for DVD's, its something you have to learn on your own.

This is what it says:
If you are having DVDs replicated at a factory, you can use GEAR PRO Mastering Edition to select either parallel track path (PTP) or opposite track path (OTP). You would then have your replicator manufacture the discs to your specifications.

If you are burning a double-layer disc, you don't have a choice. All DVD+R DL discs are manufactured as OTP. The difference between a PTP and an OTP disc is in the direction of the spiral track on layer 1 (the top layer, "behind" layer 0). In both cases, layer 0 has a spiral track starting at the inside, and going to the outside. When the DVD recorder/player switches to layer 1, it refocuses the laser, but the disc keeps spinning in the same direction of rotation. A PTP disc has a track on layer 1 that is the same as layer 0, from inside to outside. An OTP disc has a track on layer 1 that goes from the outside to the inside; the opposite as layer 0. Since recordable and eraseable discs use a pre-grooved track, they have to be manufactured either as a PTP or an OTP disc right from the start.

Then goes on to say this:
You can't burn parallel track path DVDs, because any recordable dual-layer DVD is manufactured as OTP (layer 1 has the Opposite Track Path to layer 0). Setting the track path in GEAR won't change the physical layout of the pre-groove on the recordable DVD.

Parallel Track Path DVDs can be mastered and replicated, but not "burned". Perhaps some day PTP recordable media will be available. But it is not available today. Until it does become available, if ever, all recordable DVD-9 discs are OTP.

Exactly, most of the time that happens you probably are taught a considerable amount, but they normally don't teach you everything.I agree with you though, not everything can be taught in classes. Most of the time it is a learn on your own bases for some things.Hey RemyK313 where did you see someone was trying to mess with the Actel chip bro.Cool man keep us updated on the progress of whoever is messing with that.

L-Burna : It was actually in THIS thread, I don't know if you remember, but on April 10th, Dasha74 said :
Quote:
There is another way of approaching the DVD Check problem, but probably no easier. The DMS4 Mod uses a Actel ProASIC Plus APA075 FPGA and the Toxic OS v1.3 contains the source code/configuration for this chip in their BIOS update - after its transferred to CD. I am trying to extract just the source code/configuration for the APA075 from the bios upgrade - with either PS2dis or WinHEX, then debug it in the APA075's design software to find the string/word(?) the chip is detecting and changing, then search for this matching data in the GT4 source code, probably in the IOPRP300.img, or one of its components, as L-Burna has stated earlier, and then edit the GT4 code to ignore, or accept, the wrong data it is receiving from the backup. One catch at the moment - the APA075's Dev Software is 370MB download, so I am waiting for it to arrive on CD from Actel.
You know, I never thought about asking about helping him out. If we can run a debugger on it, then we can do exactly what he's saying. It may actually be possible to find a string in there that relates to the layers, and DVD checks, and what he's saying may be possible. I don't know enough x86 assembly to navigate my way around in comfort on PCs, let alone trying to work assembly on the PS2.

Hell, I don't even really know about all the hardware involved. But I'm more than willing to at least give it a look, the way he's suggesting.

If you want the software he's talking about check out this link : http://www.actel.com/downloads/designer/

I think this may be the software he's talking about. I'm not really sure. I'm on 56k as well, so the 150MB windows download is going to take me a while.

However, I strongly urge anyone who's curious to give it a download, and try to do what he's saying. Any information that could help out should be sent to Dasha74 since he seems to know what he's talking about.

And one more thing about the programming : The kind of stuff that's necessary here is some serious knowledge of assembly, how PS2s were designed, what and WHERE to look for the information we need in the games we're working on, and some knowledge of crytography.

Programmers aren't gods, most programmers don't know jack about encryption, I don't think I've ever seen one university that requires their Computer Science / Engineering students to take a class on cryptography. That field is one that's usually a 300/400 level class, and something that requires some sort of background in statistics. Most computer engineers will take electrical engineering, programming, and all that good stuff, but will usually overlook math things that aren't directly related to calculus.

THAT is why there's such a lack of people being able to figure this game out. There's encryption on the tables, we decrypt that, and we'll have an extractor/rebuilder. Of course, it won't be us, but someone who'll actually HAVE that capability.

I'm a whiz at Java/C#/C++ and a few other languages, but I have absolutely no working knowledge of cryptography. The farthest I can get is working those crytograms in the newspaper by statistical analysis, but that's about it. A bowl of cereal, a pen, and a sunday newspaper every week isn't enough experience to even begin this kind of project :)
