don't believe it!,i spent hours, extracting all the files, resizing the .vol file (yes i used gtfs and yes i know this apparentley doesn't work but it does give you all the directories/files of the .vol file and if you remove all the files in the JP folders which i believe are the japanese files,it will resize the .vol from 2.5gb(ish) to 1,8gb)anyway i thought i'd try it for size purposes,i put the .vol file back in the directory and applied the toolboy hdd patch for pal(thinking if the image was on a hard drive then it would read as a single layer therefore the hdd patch should work on a single layer disk),but now your saying the .vol files have to be combined???AAAAAHHHH,how does the core/ioprp etc distinguish between .vol and .vol1 if they are combined?,anyway it didn't work as i imagined it wouldn't but it will resize to a dvd5 if you get rid of all the japanes support in the game!

The .Vol files are actually one file this is not nonesense alright, when they pressed the disc the .Vol file splits into the second layer(just like a Dual Layer burner).PTP method would be involved if you wanted to make a pressed disc,if you are trying to figure out how to burn the game everyone is only supplied with OTP burners. So,the game has to be built to read in a OTP state(modchips such as DMS4 have a PTP patch that make the PS2 read the disc as OTP I am assuming). The IOPRP/CORE file distinguish the combined .Vol file as it is one file munged together as it was originally made.Since the game is Dual Layered the .Vol file was split in the process, and put on the second layer.Take a look at IsoBuster or Apache2 and look at the very bottom of the first layer and then look at the second layer. At the very bottom the GT4.VOL is located at the very end.On the second layer GT4L1.VOL is located, and was renamed because of the press process, which would be close to a burning process but differ from the process. The burners we have don't support bad sector burning,so that is where press machines differ from our burners. What I am saying is if the .Vol files are not the same file, then look at the second layer where the GT4L1.Vol is the only file. The two .Vol files have to be one file, since God of War has the same structure also.Trust me the protection is new,but it wouldn't be newer than God of War.God of War came out after GT4,so this is the same thing as God of War.Look at the the technique used for God of War,both .PAK files are extracted. If you extract both .PAK files you will get different files, the two .PAK files are different. When you join the two .PAK files since we have OTP burners and are messing with Dvd5 media. It only burns the first layer, making the PS2 only read the first layer of the disc, and it determines the .PAK file located on the first layer as actually both .PAK files joined together.I am just saying what I know, and extracting from both .Vol files and joining the files inside of the .Vol files is a must. All the volume extractors out will not extract the true files from the volumes located in GT4,because it is outdated.Once someone figures out the .Elf file(CORE.GT4) then we can extract from the .Vol files and rejoin them to create it just like God of War.Speccyfan you won't get very far with the older extractors man, they are outdated and don't support extracting from the newer encryption tables of the .Vol files. The IOPRP/CORE will read the two .VOL files joined together renamed as GT4.VOL since it will be on one layer. It just constantly checks the first layer making it where it can't switch inbetween layer breaks.

If you have a modchip with a bios capable of booting DVD+R DL you can burn the game with DVD Decrypter.

If you have the original check http://forum.o2mod.com/viewtopic.php?p=6473

If you have a PAL backup iso set layer break at: 1622400 (tested)
If you have a NTSC (USA) backup iso set layer break at: 1317056 (not tested)

I don't have the NTSC USA disc so I don't know if the layer break is correct. Can anyone confirm this using ISO read mode in DVDDecrypter.

L-Burna:In regards to the Toxic Bios versions - even the original DMS bios versions - contained somewhere in the bios updates is code, that is specific to the Actel chip the DMS4 is using, that flashes the Actel chips memory. It will have some kind of header/configuration string(?) to set the Actel chip into program mode - once this is found, and it will be common to all the bios updates, you will have found the code for the Actel. The actual code for the Actel chip has to be separated from the code for the PS2, then emulated/debugged in the Actels own debug environment.I'm not sure if the mod chip is reading data in a serial or parallel format, but I am sure it is reading something sent by the DVD Drive - an identifier/command such as PTP or OTP or even the media type - in the PS2 itself, and manipulating it before the PS2 gets to process what was original sent, tricking the PS2.I have looked at a 500 plus page doc on the standard dvd commands that can be sent and received by a dvd drive unit and if the drive is 'asked' it will 'tell' the requesting system everything about the disc in the drive. There will be value that the DMS4 is receiving and then subtituting its own value.I am not a PS2 programmer, nor an expert, but I have been programming microcontrollers for some time, and firmly believe the answer is there in the DMS4 and its bios.

I agree dasha74 a programmer hooked to the Actel chip would definately give us good results of the Toxic bios files.I am kinda concerned though about the patch string, would be pretty hard to locate it without running a programmer and going through emulation/debug status like you said.

Nice,I am glad you are taking the time to look at it much appreciated. The GNU is also helpfull since it can tell when it is being tricked and so forth as you mentioned.I also agree the answer is in the Toxic bios files, but it would be pretty hard to determine what is going on without hooking anything up to the Actel chip bro.Of course the chip would have to be installed to the PS2 to have it run with the Toxic bios files flashed to the chip.I was thinking it might be usefull to get ahold of one of those DMS chips, install it then use a Actel programmer like you mentioned to extract the information needed.I am lacking the Actel programmer though, still need to get ahold of that.I also ran the CORE.GT4 Elf file through a program created by Loser called ElfView to see what is going on with this file. The file contains a header file, but when it gets to a certain point it is undetermined, the Elf file still has to be fixed for extracting/rebuilding purpose SM peeps.I looked at it and can't really say from starting point to the process where the header of the Elf file is undetermined, but will look back at it again and try to write down from sector and code where the header is identified and when it stops reading. The DMS and Toxic files are probably the best route to go,but still I need to get ahold of the programmer for the Actel chip.Hey dasha74 try this out alright, see if you can find the hdloader contained in the Toxic bios files alright man.You would definately be better off looking for the hdloader, than the string that tricks the PS2.The hdloader is pretty big in size, that is why I said it would probably be a good idea to check for the hdloader instead of the string first.Dasha74 you are smart, don't get me wrong alright.I am just lacking the equipment at the momment to even start with the chip.Hopefully soon I can help you out more, but at the momment still have to get ahold of the required tools you are using, the programmer would definately be a good start.I will keep looking at the CORE.GT4 Elf file for right now,but hopefully soon I can help you out on the Actel chip.Just gotta get the mod and the programmer to get started.

i found a website that tells you how to merge files together, this is not the usual combining of files where you just join the files together and everything becomes one, no, this tells you how to combine a file that has been separated ino two like the GT4.VOL and GT4L1.VOL. the website is: http://www.arm.com/support/faqdev/1447.html

I've been a bit side tracked the last week or so developing hardware for the PS2 and GT4 and havent had time to do too much with the DMS bios's. I did try using winhex to compare the toxic bios to the original DMS bios for matching hex codes to find the start of the code for the for the Actel chip.Another way would be to write some dummy code for the chip, compile it, and view it with winhex to find the data right at the start of the code for the chip, then search the toxic bios for the same data, then we should have found the start of the code for the chip, so then it can be extracted and debugged. The installation diagrams for the DMS mod chips are a little help, and I have a feeling that the diagram showing an IC with 10 wires connected to it has something to do with it - it may be the dvd drive controller IC, but most - if not all - of the IC's in playstations are proprietary IC's and data on them is nearly impossible to find, or they are not labelled as what they really are.I will start looking into the bios and HDloader more later this week.

there is an option in hdd hex editor that can combine two files, what it does is it tries to find what is different in any two files that you select. You can try and see the ToxicOS and the Actel.

Also what is this relink thing on Apache 2?

what happened to these toxic people? they said they were gonna release a dvd patch for gt4 so that everyone can play it on any modchip, its been almost 2 months now. It doesnt take that long for them to put the Toxic OS into a patcher, if they are programmers they should have it ready within a week. I think what everyone should do here is get the Toxic OS and whoever knows their programming good then try and make a patcher for it, because i don't think that Toxic are gonna make this patcher happen. Where the hell are their website anyway. if i type in toxic os in google it just doesnt give me an official link.

Firstly :

sasha1303... the reason people are trying to back this game up, is because some of us, unlike you, like this game and enjoy it..
another reason is so the original copy doesn't get screwed up which it can for many reasons...

Secondly : Don't bite my head off if this is the wrong thing..but :

A set of patches.. i dunno if the process works, i have not tested.

I know I'm about to sound like a complete fool, but I'm willing to take the chance so that I don't waste any DL media.

I have DMS4 EZI flashed with Toxic BIOS 1.3. Does this mean that I will be able to make a direct backup of GT4 (using a DVD+R DL) and play it without any of the issues/problems that have been discussed throughout the majority of this thread?

apparentley, there's an option in the dms4 menu that allows dvd9 capability, you just have to enable it,i'd test it for you mate but i was suckered into buying a dms3 just before the dms4 came out and they aren't updating it anymore.By the way, anyone,is it true that the dms4 is just a dms3 with a bigger flash rom?,if so,cant somebody just make a dms3 flash that disables certain features in the dms3 and leave enough room for dvd9 support,i have no idea how hard this is to do but,hey you guys seem smart enough!!,who knows eh?

cmon, somebody has to know what is going on with this toxic os patch to apply onto the actual image.

sasha1303 the fact that people are trying to back this game up is because they like it and also they don't want their originals getting ruined, BUT, what are you gonna do if more PS2 games come out like this, what will happen then?
