I have been reading this forum for years. I have read some threads about the upconverters. I had a samsung HD841. Like I said had. It would not read DVD-R's although Samsung says that it should. I even exchanged it for a new one because Samsung thought it was just a bad unit. Well the second one did the same thing. The only reason I went with this one was I got it free with my new HD TV. Well Best Buy allowed me to exchange it for the Toshiba SD 5970. It works great plus it has HDMI istead of DVI.
