having trouble with connecting...PLEASE HELP

i connect my xbox with a crossover cable, when its connected at the bottom right corner of the screen comes up with a connection sign, but after a while it says that theres an error occured!!! i then try and repair the connection, but i am not successful...previously on my laptop i was able to do this, but with my new computer, i am having trouble..
also with smart FTP, i put the I.P adress in and the password, but it always back to 'adress' and 'password'..

head over to http://www.download.com and grab a copy of CoreFTP, I't simple to use and unlike other recomended programs like FlashFXP it's totally free.
