Dual Layer question.

I was considering purchasing a new dvd burner, should I get a dual layer one? I have not come acroos any movie that I can not shrink to a 4.7 disc? I am assuming that they are for really long movies, are there any other benifits to them? Thanks, ---zen-->

Double the storage........................
(most commercial dvd's now are dvd9)
Get 2 films onto one dvd some uncompressed.
Put multiple episodes onto one dvd, episodes which span several dvd's maybe able to be compressed onto one dvd, or two.
Have exact copies inc menus and extras without compression.
Not much price difference between them really, but I would recommend a dual layer, even if you don't utilise it, the prices of DL media is gonna plummet soon and then it would be very economical to use DL over single...................
I have a Pioneer 108 which is dual layer and it is super, the new Pioneer 109 is out now and has better capabilities.
I get my DL media for £3.00 each at the mo', but expect it to drop soon, then I shall be using more DL media.
Just my thoughts anyway....................get one........

i suppose you are right, but any new burner out will have dual layer nowadays, but its speed which is more important i guess? although i burn at 4x.....but new drives / DL will be fast, so if you want more speed and a + and - get a new drive?

I'd like to know this as well, i just got a pioneer 109
upgrade to my 107, and the cheapest media i could find locally were £3.99 each disc.

These are the exact same discs, but not from the website they are on.
I frequently goto a regular computer show called Bowlers at Manchester, Trafford Park part of the NCM network and pick them up there..................
(yes I am in the UK)

watch out on buying media from bigpockets tho... i have been skanked twice by them! once on Mitsu chems disks and once on TY... branded always seem fine tho! and they are quite cheap for most things... especially epson ink :)

Hi babelfish,
Sorry to reply to an outdated posting but was just wondering what the problem was with bigpockets? Was it the media codes? If so they are now all checked before any items are placed on site by reading the disk using software
Zenarrow has anyone answer your question? If not then I will, I presume you are installing it into your computer system, you will need to take the top off the system, then find a free 5 1/4 inch bay (shouldn?t be a problem in most cases) now you also need to make sure you have a free power connector and also a free IDE connector, if you have all of these then it is a simple case of slide the writer into the machine, connect the power cable and IDE cable with pin 1 closest to the power connector, screw it in and then put the lid back on, fire up the pc system and depending on your bios it will find it automatically.

they had the right MID codes but the disks were really bad quality - and couldnt be read after being written to.
i think they were fakes as a few things didnt match with real ones, such as serials, containers, markings, dye colour etc.
i still buy some stuff from them (their ritek traxdatas are nice and cheap and excellent disks)

thanks I am glad you like some of the products :) as for the TYG issue they may have been end of production items which means they are not always garanteed but we are a lot more strict about the media types we have in stock now so I hopefully it will not occur again
