burning slide shows on CD-R vs DVD-R

Hi all. I'm going to be making a photo slide show for my marine wives group while our husbands are deployed. We plan to sell copies of the slide show. I know not all DVD players are capable of playing VCDs, is this true of the DVD-Rs? Or will burning the slide show on DVD-Rs hit a wider range of compatible dvd players? The length of the show will be less than an hour so size is not of consequence.
