"Packet writing" SW: Nero InCD or Adaptec DirectCD

I'm interested in trying "packet writing" software so my CD ROM will function "like a floppy" for backing up files. Does anyone use Nero InCD or Adaptec DirectCD? If so, can you save to it like a floppy? Would be so kind as to tell me how it is working for you? I've heard that it may put all my data at risk and maybe it would be better to buy a "USB Flash Drive". If anyone has one of these, how is it working for you?
