Unsolvable Video to TV Problem

I am trying to play video on my TV from my laptop.

I have read through the other thread on this problem. Nothing worked. I have the latest FFDshow installed, which I downloaded from this site. I switch the display to TV only. NOTHING WORKS. Video files are blacked out and will not play on the television. They play on the laptop just fine. I see my entire desktop and laptop, everything BUT the video. I can't understand what is going wrong here!

What do I need to do in order to make the video not be blacked out?

Specs:

IBM ThinkPad laptop
Windows XP SP2
Intel P4 1.6ghz
256 RAM
A very frustrated user
