How do I use the Nero ASPI (layer) with other programs - for e.g. DVD Decrypter? I heard it was possible and the Nero ASPI (layer) works well with other programs.

Thanks.:)

I would strongly recommend you visit www.adaptec.com
and get the ASPI drivers there, and use them instead.

It's bulletproof!

I don't mean to be rude but, if I wanted to do that I would have done it.

Despite what is says under my username, I'm not a complete newbie, just a newbie to the forums on this website. There are some issues listed with all ASPIs I've looked into (including those on Adaptec's website). I use the Nero ASPI with Nero 6 and haven't had problems with it so I want to use the Nero ASPI with other programs which I've read has been done successfully with freat results (found it on this website I believe).

Sorry 7seven,

I'll double check, but i'm pretty sure Nero ASPI only contains two off the .dll's. While Adaptec's ASPI contains all four .dll's. Different softwares request these different .dll's as they require.

All my software that requires the ASPI .dll's runs from Adaptec's .dll's. I have absolutely no issues.

Sorry for not directly answering you question, but I would figure it's just a lot simpler process to work with Adaptec's layer, than to try and do what you want to do.

As for Decrypter, I've set mine to system ASPI (adaptec's) and it too runs well.

If you have Windows XP you can generally get along without ASPI installed. Microsoft SPTI is all I have and everything including DVD Decrypter all work fine. There may be some programs that require ASPI, but DVD Decrypter has an SPTI option. Works for me, anyway.

i hope I wasn't being too harsh with my comments Weycraze. It's just that I've had a few occasions where people reply with advice on different methods of doing something, etc rather than answer my question/s cos they assume that I don't really know what I'm doing or something. It gets annoying after a while and the fact that it say newbie under my username has an influence on people's replies. Thanks for your input.:)

To be honest I think Nero is a simpler solution as I've read various reports of problems with the different ASPIs, including Adaptec & ForceASPI. I use Nero ASPI with Nero 6 so I thought it should be fine but you've pointed out there may be a couple of '.dll' files not present. How does Nero 6 work without them then? It doesn't need the other two whereas other programs do?

ForknDave, I only found out late last night (before coming back here today) that DVD Decypter can work without an ASPI. It says in the DVD Decrypter guide that you do so I was surprised when I came across an article mentioning 'SPTI vs ASPI', and did a search to find that I could use SPTI with DVD Decrpter. I still may need an ASPI with other programs and I'd much rather have used the Nero ASPI.

Hmm ... I've read the before. You seem to like saying that.

You have an ASPI layer right? That's it. You just need to make sure you have one installed to work with DVD Decrypter (in regards to burning w/ Decrypter) ripping won't matter if you have an aspi.

I guess I better go into detail, before you accuse me of not answering your question.

You don't really do anything with an ASPI layer, except make sure it's installed. Some say you don't need an ASPI, I disagree.

Some like Nero's ASPI, some don't. I personally don't. I like ForceASPI. The ASPI layer does nothing more than help with communications between your hardware and programs. Says what to do and what to do it with.

Amen to that - ASPI is from the '90s dude; I do this/that & everything with no Adaptec ASPI. Who needs it!?

ummm ... I did say that :)

I had a few programs that wouldn't work right. Installing an aspi layer solved those problems.

Also The_OGS,

Do you CopyToDVD or any programs made by VSO? Or Nero?

I use DVDDecrypter, BeSweet, DVDShrink, Nero, GordianKnot and CDex w/o any ASPI.

You use Nero ... Nero has it's own aspi layer.

Exactly - so I don't require good ol' ForceASPI, or any flavour Adaptec ASPI layer :^)
CDex is set to 'use native NT SCSI library' (is that what buddy called Microsoft SPTI?) anyway, works fine for me.
Nero is Nero, and installs what it needs...
But I have sure installed a lot of ForceASPI + Adaptec WINASPI v4.71 on many Win95/Win98/WinME/Win2K machines over the years.
Happy to worry about it no longer! LoL :^)

Flip - you gotta X850? How is it?

@ The_OGS
You may be correct, but many softwares will not work without an ASPI, and as far as I know XP doesn't come from the factory with one.

Because mine sure didn't. A lot of my scanning apps require those .dll's.

And out of the line up of software u just mentioned DVDDecrypter is the only one I use.

i tend to recommend ASPI to ppl cus it doesn't hurt, but it does help when they have unknowingly got ASPI files that are corrupted. Plus no matter where i read about it, i still can't find a definitive yay or nay.

and....this thread still hasn't proved to me whether recommending ASPI is right or wrong. I shall still suggest it to ppl when i see they haven't got it installed

You don't actually use it. It's either installed or it's not.

Well again, you either have it installed or you don't. IMO, there are better aspi layers out there (ie. ForceASPI). But yes, if you have it installed it will work.

I know now I don't need an ASPI with DVD Decrypter but that's not the point...I have heard of cases where it's been done.
Huh? Someone got Decrypter to use the Nero ASPI layer? I highly doubt it...
I have Nero installed so its ASPI layer must too be installed (I didn't ask for it but I didn't say no.)
I also run DVDDecrypter, it never asked me for ASPI anything - just works.

Yes true :^) Hard to believe? Not really - you're just not looking at it properly.
You can't open up Decrypter and tell it to use this ASPI or that ASPI; these are system files that are installed and registered to the system, and are present when/if needed (called for).
There is no user interaction, operation is transparent and they are non configurable.
They have to do with ROM drives, the CDRom filesystem (yes, CDRoms have their own) and treating the CDRom like a 32-bit SCSI device.
They are basically a compatability throwback from 16-bit OS's like Win95/98/ME.
Things are different in NT but good ol' tried & true programs still work great with their traditional ASPI layer :^)
Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it... I'm right there with that.
I just said, I'm glad I don't have to fook with it anymore (I remember some epic struggles with ASPI glitched in Win98 machines).
And listen Mr. Perma-n00bie, don't disrespect Flip218 if you don't like the answers! He has helped many 100's of people and what he tells you is (mostly) true ;^)
So good luck,
Regards
