Trying to backup Star Wars A New Hope, this is Episode 4. Have AnyDVD in the background, and tried both Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Stopping at 49%. Has anyone had any problems with this? Is there something I can do to get this to work. The following is the DVD Decrypter Log.

Looks like the file has a scratch at that point. Are you making a copy of a copy?

Try to rip the DVD in file mode after you clean the DVD real well. Then use Shrink if it rips OK to do the .ISO . Disable AnyDVD if you are using DVDDecrypter

The reason I asked about the copy of a copy is this :
" I 16:02:14 Source Media Region Code: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 "
I only get that in DVDDecrypter if I am making a copy of a copy
Usually I get a region code of 1 when ripping the original
No problem though

Or conversly, you could use AnyDVD and Shrink.

Has to be a copy of a copy, especially the copy protection. No other way this would be like this. All DVD's that come from a retail source from a major studio such as FOX in this case have CSS on them. I used Shrink only to back this one up, no problems here. Did all 3.

I can't explain this. I had done Empire Strikes Back a while ago, but with many problems, it finally went. I now am trying to do Return of the Jedi and the first one made, A New Hope. These are right out of the packageing. They both get to like 49% on both Shrink with and without AnyDVD and on decrypter. With decrypter, I've tried making the file and the iso. Both with no luck. Can't be scratchs, Return of the Jedi is spotless. Any other suggestions? Kinda at a loss.

Is there is possibility that this is a problem with the drive? Or is def. a disk thing?

It is definetly a Disk thing as you say. I think you have a copy of a copy. This is why I asked the question originally. If this was purchased locally I would carry it back and get a Legit copy as someone has just scammed the place where you bought it and now you bought the copy they returned

You get through part of the disc read prior to failure which suggest to me a disc problem rather than a drive problem. Have you tried a different disc? Have you tried to copy a different movie that you have had success with before?

Mike is probably right. That would explain why I am having a problem with both Star Wars movies. It seems that someone did just that, and took both back at the same time. I took both off the top of the shelf, and they could both have been done by the same guy at the same time. I had done a few movies yesterday and they all went fine. Thats why I was reluctant to suggest that it could be the drive.

I had problems copying this same disc until I traded it for another one and it copied fine. I believe it is probably a bad pressing. As far as no copy protection shown, AnyDVD will do that if it is on. It probably makes the disc show as region free as well. Just my $.02.

I don't believe this. Just went to the same store, took them both back and got new ones. A New Hope gave me a cyclic redundancy check at 50%, and then I tried decrypter without AnyDVD, doing the exact same thing. Here's the log.

I had the same problem with Episode 4 using DVD X Copy Platinum. I'm going to return it and get another copy. I'm also gonna try Episodes 1,2,5, and 6 So I'll keep you guys posted.

I use AnyDVD with DVD Clone 2 and have not had a problem recording any movie original or a copy to include the Star Wars movies.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread.
I have the 4 disc set (widescreen) and when I first got it, "A New Hope" would completely stop playing in any of my DVD players (including computer) halfway through. I returned the disc to K-mart (where I worked at the time) several months later and the new disk had the exact same problem in the exact same spot. I figured I'd just make a copy of it and that would fix it...nope. It wont even read the file VTS_02_4.VOB at all. I've tried every ripper that I've seen mentioned but the ripper wont do much good if the drive can't even read that file on the disc. I've tried it in 3 different DVD drives and the same thing.
At this point, I'd be happy if someone with a working copy could rip just the VTS_02_4.VOB file and send it to me so I can burn a working disc. Anyone?
