This is an email that the matrix team sent me about this problem.

As you are modding the new Slim PSTWO, take care as about 2-3% of these
PS2 have a problem to the RS200 laser contreller that can burn the laser
head.
Be sure to install a laser protection fix into the PSTWO, just in case you
PS2 is one of these 2-3%.

They also recomended the neo xii fix insted of the usual mfd board fix. The neo has a pic chip in it as the other diode fixes do not. I plan on modding my ps2 version 12 with a matrix infinity chip and a neo fix.
