Thats becuae when you put it in the lowest it will only read at the lowest your dvd burner supports.

You don't have to buy a new burner...I burn all my games at 4x and they all work fine! I use Maxell DVD-R Media, and some games that have a lot of videos you will get a skip out of it once and a very great while (Example: Metal Gear Solid 3) But other than that I burnt all my games at 4x because that is the lowest my DVD Burner supports and I know this for a fact because on my Blank DVD-R it says 8x/1x...

I always burn at 3.8X with my burner even when DVD Decrypter is set to 1X.
But it always works for me.
As far as +R vs -R
well it depends on which PS2 you have, my V7 and slim PSTwo will play either, but the -R seems to work better. The Phillips 8X DVD-R discs i use work every time. 100% success rate with them and my Sony DRU700A burner.
