can anyone tell me how to copy indivdual episodes from an original dvd to back up, my kids keep ruining the simpsons dvds

You can try DVD Shrink, free program, use it in re-author mode. I have used this for episodic tv dvds. Good guide available at

Great, I have backed up four seasons of the Sopranos using DVD Shrink and all came out fine.
