I just bought a new dvd burner. I went through the steps to set it up and it will not respond at all. I checked the driver for the usb port and it says that the USB mass storage device has a problem. What can I do?
Please help

Did your burner come with drivers?

What operating system are you using?

I am using Windows XP. It came with driver disk for win 98se edition but it said i should not have to do anything for xp.
It said it would automatically detect it and assign it a new drive letter.

OK try this.

- unplug your DVDRW
- go into device manager and uninstall your USB controllers
- restart your system and let windows install the drivers automatically
- Now go back into your device manager and make sure your controller is listed as "Enhanced USB controller"
- If not listed as enhanced or something close to that then you don't have USB 2.0 and will have a problem running your DVDRW.
- if your controllers are listed as enhanced then you should be good to go.
- Plug the power cord into your drive and then plug the drive into your USB port and let windows install it automatically.

Ok I uninstalled all the controllers.
I checked when came back on and they all were there again the top one says USB 2.0 Enhanced Host controller. The burner still didn't respond when I plugged it in.
Just got the mass storage thing again.

How many USB slots does your computer have? Try different slots.

What is the brand/make or your DVD writer?

Disconnect your drive...

Install the win98se drivers
reboot
then plug drive in and see if that works

Yes these drives are very good external DVD writers.

What software do you have installed (DVD/CD writing type)?

No that shouldnt matter, but what software do you use with your CD burner. You may need to uninstall all of your CD/DVD type software and give it another go.

You can install the win98se driver and it shouldnt cause any problems, but make sure the drive is not connected when you load the drive.

You can just reinstall it after you get your DVD burner working but your software may be conflicting with it right now.

Sorry had to go to bed last night.. ;-)

Do you have any other USB device you can plug into your USB slot just to be sure it is working properly?

I have just noticed that you have double posted this question. Unless you wish to incur the wrath of the mods, I suggest that you don't do it again.
