Should I use dvdr or hardrives. Money is no object. I need speed & reliability (no loss data) when it comes to retreiving my files. Discs will be stored on spindles and hardrives will be kept in a safe. What would you burning guru's do in this situation. Thanx in advance.

Well, my mom's company uses a tape drive for it's backups. each tape holds 24 gigs of data (at least teh ones my moms work uses do). Tape drives are up to $2000 or more though.

Money is no object though. Since it isn't you can buy me a few tape drives too, while you're at it. :)

O.K. I lied, money is sort of an issue. I was thinking about some $200 hardrives or about a few hundred dvdr's.

HDD, maybe a few external/USB2 ones. Otheriwse, it's nearly 2 spindles of 100-pack DVDs at 5 minutes a piece...minimum. Or you could wait a few years for dual-layer Blu-ray DVDs which will hold 50GB each.

hey dogbomb, you say external drives, how bout internal drives, and just removing them when they are full. It's just me but i just like internal better than external, or do you know something bad about internal drives that i should be aware of.

Nothing wrong with getting 3 Western Digital 250GB Internal hard drives to do your backups. It's just that you said "money was no object". ;)
I used smaller capacity hard drives as removable backups too when I got bigger ones and needed the drive bay slots. It's not that much of a pain these days with easy slide-out bays and Win XP (no stupid drivers to install). The only thing you might want to think about is whether you go for SATA or IDE drives. You can get really cheap IDE drives now (half price of SATA), but that's because IDE is on its way out. But I'm sure there will be cards out that will make them adaptable to a SATA-equipped motherboard...hopefully.

How do you have 750 gigs not backed up already? I mean, my notebook only has 40 gigs. I also have a 200gb external harddrive. Surely if you had 750 gigs on your computer, you would just buy another hard drive thats exactly the same, backup your hard drive and store it. It might be just me but that seems like a simple solution.

Massive internal HDs would be what I would go for. I've got 1/2 a terabyte of storage space in my 2 PCs, easy to access & transfer files with my router. 750gig is a lot of info, is it films?

I've seen a terabyte drive, however it has been a month since i've seen it and it carried a hefty price tag, however, i'm guessing it's cheaper than buying 3 250gb drives, it was 459.99 canadian.

LOL
There is not enough hard drives in the world to store my errant behaviour with! Just the amount of times I went over the speed limit on my bikes would make even the hardest judge shudder. The amount of speed that I went over would make police have a dicky fit! My record is 105mph over the speed limit. That would have been a lifetime ban me thinks!

I should put that in my sig.

Not wishing to incite or condone law breaking in any way, but can anyone beat my record? Going through villages at high speed does not count as I consider that dangerous. You may knock over a child or other innocent. You are only allowed to damage ones' self. The only criteria is that you have to be in the open countryside.

@ DUBBZ
The LaCie externals that webuser linked to are indeed an excellent and reliable option :)
