you need to take a breather, get your thoughts together and then post the most neccessARY information so that the members get a full idea of your problem.
We know you use memorex, burn at 8X and are using Nero.
What we dont know but would give us a better indication is:
What system do you have?
what is your operating system?
How much ram does your system have?
What other programs are you running ?
What errors do you recieve when burning ,when the freezing occurrs.
As you can see you havent listed much info and i know that we arent mind readers here,so how about it

Check that your dvdrw has not switched to PIO and is in DMA mode. Go into device manager then under hardware, click on IDE ATA/ATAPI, locate the IDE channel for your dvdrw, click on advanced settings, make sure it says DMA if available.

Are you talking about ripping/encoding/burning time or burning time only?

what type of files are use tring to re encode to an mpeg 2 compatible format?
Have you tried vso divx to dvd?
Quote: sometimes it takes 8-9 hrs for some wierd reason
Some of the older encoding programs like cucusofts avi2mpeg when it came out at the start of last year had times of 12 to 18 hours to encode a 700meg AVI.But with advances in technology those times have been greatly improved. Now for example main concept mpeg encoder takes about 90 mins to do the same file size and vso divx to dvd will also achieve that file size in about 1hr.
A common cause of why you are getting this type of time is the program you are using, could be cheap media or it may even be that its time to defrag your computer.
What program are you using to encode?
what media are you using?
Have you defragged of late?
is your pc spyware free?
Can you do a ctrl+alt+del and then tell us how many proceesors are running?

Memorex works for some people but generally it doesnt work for many. There are heaps of memorex threads on AD for you to choose from just try the search feature!!!!!
Try encoding your files with the programs i suggested?
You need to defrag. With the amount of data that is accumulated by storing and burning it gradually slows down your machine and is some times a cause of slowness!!!!

Encoding is opposite of decoding. Encoding means that a file, whether it is an audio, video or picture file, is compressed to another format that normally takes up less physical drive space than the previous format.
Common video encoding methods are DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 -- most common audio encoding method or format is MP3.
Your AVI needs to be changed to an mpeg2 format so that you are able to burn it to dvd and then play it in a standalone dvd player

ok but if it takes me 1 and a half hrs just to turn my AVI into mpeg2 wouldnt it just defeat the purpose of taking less time since it takes about 90 minutes to do that anyway?
And why would my Nero freeze up and go not responding in task manager when i put more than 2 chapters in a movie?

I think Andmerr is on the right track. The long time he is getting is probably from the AVI to dvd format conversion. He may somehow be doing it without realizing it takes several hours to convert those type of files.

@joshminer---If you haven't already been told, its against forum rules to multipost the same type question. Just for future reference.
