I have downloaded 2 different versions of God of War, the proper confusion version and another version. I have read up on this game and heard that the version I downloaded first of all crashes at around level 4 and the proper confusion version supposedly runs fine all the way through.

My game is crashing during the FMV sequence after level 1. It shows you the main character on a boat, then he calls out a name and the female headpiece of his ship comes to life. It's just after this, in the exact same place, that the game freezes on both versions I dowloaded.

Does anyone else get this and would they know why it is happening?

Cheers.

It could be the way you burned it.
Did you do the usual: burn at lowest speed possible (1x or 2x)
make sure you have good media
I had another game that would freeze at the opening scence and I just reburnt it on better media and slower speed.
Can you skip the scene before the freeze and continue play as normal?

What media are you using, what speed did your burn, and how are you playing your backup (modchip? Swap Magic ver x.x?).

I have the Confusion rip and I am all the way to the bluffs of madness and have only experienced minor stuttering.

Make sure you are using quality media and only burn at no more the 2x. I burned my copy at 1x on a Verbatim 8x -R and I use Swap Magic 3.3

Thanks for your quick replies guys.

I am using BulkPaq disks. These have worked fine for my XBox backups as well as a couple of PS2 games (I only recently started using backups for my PS2). I always burn at the slowest speed, 2x. I could understand if it crashed in a different place but this seems strange.

I'm using Swap Magic 3.3 but have read that others have used this and got along fine.

Sometimes I have games that seem to freeze, but if I wait a few minutes it jumps to the end of movie and I can continue on just fine. Try waiting about 5 min. and see if anything happens. I would also try another disk brand if it is not too much trouble. What vers ps2 do you have?

From what I have gathered on this site Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, and Verbatim are the best brands out there. I just got a bunch of TY off supermediastore.com at a great price. I've been playing off a Verbatim, but I just made a TY copy and it works great too.
