Is there any FREE program(s) available, that can identify DVD / CD media? As in tell me what type of media I'm using, it's dependability, etc....

You can download the free version of dvdinfopro. It will tell you the code and also has a couple of test where you can scan your backups. It's a very handy program.

Nero infotool and dvdidentifier will also tell you the code.

There is a program call DVD Indentifier http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm
However, I agee with Saugmon. We prfer DVD Info Pro downloadable at http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ because multiple tools are provided.
Drive ifo, media indentifier, DVD RW formatting, disk analysis and more!
