I have an avi file that I converted to dvd format
so that I could watch it on my home dvd player.

I used winAVI to convert the file and then CloneDVD
to burn it to dvd.

Everything burned fine and played on my home player, but
there a during playback there were several times
when the movie would pause for a second and then skip
a few minutes ahead to another scene.

Is there something that I can do to prevent this from happening?
Is there better software that I could be using?

The dvd media I am using are Memorex DVD-R and the burner
is an internal made by Lite-On.

Any help would be great.

Yeah you can do your self a big favor and get different media. Memorex is the worst and causes to many issues to mention. Do a search for memorex and you will literally have thousands of posts about there problems.

My recommendations to you would be these disks. Most will agree with this.. I hope :-)

Buying Online
Taiyo Yuden (genuine TY?s there are fakes out there so beware)
Ritek G04 brand these would be the x4 disks again beware of fakes
Prodisc 2nd class media, but newer media x8 seems to work well for people

Buying at the store (Best Buy, Office Depot, Wal-Mart ect.)
Fuji film ? Manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, MCC, Ricoh Japan, Prodisc, Fuji Film all fairly good manufacturers
Maxell ? Manufactured by Maxwell, Ritek, RicohJapan, Taiyo Yuden
TDK ? Manufactured by TDK, Ritek, RicohJapan, Maxwell, MCC, CMC Beware of the CMC brand
Verbatim ? MCC, CMC, TY, RicohJapan, Ritek again beware of CMC which it seems Verbatim is using more frequently lately.
Sony - RicohJapan, MCC, Sony

Note: A good rule of thumb when purchasing your media in the store is to look for ?made in Japan or Singapore? stay away from ?made in Taiwan or Hong Kong? When buying online always try and get ?Branded? media this way you can be sure you are getting the genuine article. There is an exception to that rule and it would be Taiyo Yuden disks. You just need to buy from a reputable dealer when buying online. Here are a few I have bought from with good experience. Of course it isn?t going to be the same for everyone.

Supermediastore.com ? Rated number 1 just about anywhere you look.
Rima.com ? Fast and cheap good service
Mertline.com ? Little slower on shipping, but quality media

Ones you should stay clear of
Shop4tech.com ? Let?s just say you get what you pay for.. I received fake TY?s from them

I tried burning the same file again last night, but switched the burn speed from maximum to 4x. This time the disc played without any skips. Will burning at lower speeds always produce better results?

I am also going to get some new media based on what you listed above. I have heard alot of bad things about memorex also. The ones I have were free so I thought I would try to use them.

Just some info on how i backup dvd's,AVI divx and all that.

First get DivxToDvd made by VSO-Software
This will convert all you're divx AVI files into VIDEO_TS files.
Wich you need for a video-dvd.

To burn the video_ts file you created use DVD Shrink.
Simple and its good quality.

If you want to backup from a dvd directly use alchohol 120%.
Best program ever since it bypasses all security's and region codes.

I'm no expert on this but it works for me.

wow, I burned a whole spindle of 50 Memorex DVD's with not a single coaster and they were made in Tawain (OH NOOOOOO!!11). Slow down your burn speeds to 2X you bunch of breaknecks!! Those DVDR's get nice and saturated thoroughly with that slow laser burn.

Hey bbmayo or anyone else as i type this, divx to dvd is converting 21 AVI files for me but it keeps video packet dropeed due to error on frame and then it gives the frame and theres a big list of them, the progress bar is working fine along with the preview window but are the errors a problem? Will the converted files be corrupt or messed up??

Please reply,
the Jman

Not sure? Why not try converting less of those files at a time, this could solve your problem.
