I downloaded a movie in mpeg format. I was able to burn it on a DVD with the software that I have Sonic. The DVD plays on my computer DVD but the DVD that is atached to my TV doesn't recognize it. It says cannot play DVD. Is there anything I need to do like maybe convert the mpeg files into another format before burning them......so that a regular DVD unit can play them.

thanks

In order for your standalone to read your file, you'll need to convert the file to .vobs (which are mpeg-2 files) along with the necessary .IFOs and .BUPs. There are several programs that will allow you to make a menu, which is a longer process. Or you can just convert it to dvd-compliant files, then burn with your desired app, such as Nero.

Most people use VSO DivxToDvd to convert any file (.avi, .wmv, .mpg, etc) to dvd-compliant files. This is easy to use, but no ability to create menus as of yet.

A guide to help you through it:

Here's a link to other converters. Not all of them are freeware, bear in mind...

If you want to create menus with the movie, you can use Nero Vision Express...and here's a link to a guide:

Also, the type and brand name of the blank dvd disc is very important on playback quality and compatibility. Some questions needed to help you decide which discs to use and discs can your dvd burner read/write (also other questions on PC specs):

What is the brand name and type of your dvd burner?
Which formats is it able to read/write? (dual format)
What is the brand name and type of dvd blank discs are you using?
Do you have the latest firmware for your burner?
How much free hard drive space do you have?
How much RAM do you have?
Which operating system are you using (XP, W2k, ME, 98, etc.)?
What is the brand name of your standalone dvd player, and how old is it?

Depends on your set top player you may be suprised at the players that will play mpeg 1 and 2 files. If I where you I would make a dvd data disk and burn mpeg to disk and see if dvd player will play it. I just burned a mpeg2 file on dvd data mode and it played fine in my Apex. Also you can use a program like Sonic MyDVD and just drop mpeg file in
program it will create menues chapters the whole nine yards for ya.

Good Luck
