I have hdadvance 2.0 and PS2 fatty with Maxtor 40g installed inside. HDAdvance formated the drive. I am trying to download a new MAP from SOCOM 2 to the hard drive and I get error initializing HDD. I can back up a copy of a game and play it fine booting from hdadvance dvd.
Why would the dload to hdd fail? When I start the PS2 with no CD it will recognize the mem card but not hte hdd. I have a friend that has the original Sony hdd and it came with hdloader..he CAN see his HDD when booting PS2 with no cd.
Am I missing somthing here???
Thanks

maybe not. I would recommend trying the HDD in another unit, if possible. It could be something so small as being disconnected from the network adapter. but ... before you buy, i'd try it on someone's ps2.

I used HD Advance. I can copy games to the HDD fine and play from it. What I cant do is download SOCOM 2 Maps to it. It fails to initialize.
I have found some posts of this exact thing and it indicates that if you use a HDD that is NOT the OEM Sony HDD you cant download the SOCOM maps or use it like a big mem card. Since the HDD is just a seagate or MAXTOR anyhow...I imagine that there is some firmware or special formating on the OEM Sony drive.
Has anyone been able to figure out how to use a NON OEM drive as a giant MEM card or figure out the formating of the OEM Sony Drive??

Try searching the forums here, but I am convinced it can't be done, or if it can be done, it's not gonna be very easy. I have an original HDD and I have the SOCOM II maps. There has to be a clear advantage of owning an official Sony HDD.

There is no difference. I have several scratches on my DVD one, so I tend to use the CD one. They both work ... just consider it an extra copy of the program. Awesome program, btw.

you can use a non OEM hd ont he ps2 as big mem card, but you'll need a copy of the disk that came with the official sony drive, and not all unofficial hds work with it. for instance, i had a 160 gb maxtor drive at first in my ps2, and then put that in ym pc and took my spare 40 gb seagate out of my pc and put that in my ps2. when i had the maxtor in, i could easily format it for use with the ps2 to use it as a big mem card (and life was great) and on ei changed it for the seagate, ive never been able to use that one as a mem card, ever (and life was not so great).
so i say that to say, yes, it can in fact be done, but if you dont have a friend with the official hd tools disk, youll have to find it online and odnwload it, which then means youll need a modchip, which youll need anyways in order to enable atad patching (not all chips support this)

what software you using to get DNAS of the disc you want to get ID from?
you need the software off this site
http://www.consolepoint.com/index.html?lang=en-us&target=d21.html
they call it Disc ID puller and ID inserter
put ID puller in your ps2 load it normally like a backup, then swap it for the game with the ID you want, write it down now
then make and ISO of the game like normal, then use ID inserter to insert the ID of the game into the backup
regarding the HDD i use HD advance so i dont know alot of HD Loader, except its the same thing for free!
but i formatted my drive with hd advance before i could use it

yeah most games require a broadband connection for it too work, best way is too do a search on google, or another is when your in town take a look at game your backing up etc and it will tell you on the back, or check your copy at home
the thing with the sony dnas is you dont have to use the ID off that game, you can use ANY id of a game for it too work
so if you have NHL 2005 ID, you could use it for Fifa 2005 and so on, but i dont recommend doing that. its better to get a legitimate ID of the game

Major Problems getting the ps2 hdd functioning..
first - my setup:
V10 ps2
Duo 2 SE modchip
Seagate ST380011A 80G / Maxtor 80G
Network adaptor
HD Loader / HD Advance
When I hooked up my new Seagate drive it detects the drive fine and formats, says 'Formatting Hard Drive, Please Wait..'
The thing is, after an hour I got sick of waiting, rebooted the thing, and just got the HD Advance page with no menus etc.
I reformatted the drive on a pc (got it back to the stage of formatting again on the ps2), except this time left it running overnight (ie 7 hours), still won't format.
I then tried HD Loader, same deal.
So I thought maybe it was the hdd (incompatible?), so I swapped it over with the 80G Maxtor from my pc, except exactly the same thing happens!
- detects the drive
- starts formatting the drive
- then nothing!
there is some short bursts of hdd (sounding) activity, but that's it!
Am very much on the verge of giving up.. any help would be appreciated as I can't find any reference to any similar problems. (and yes, the jumper is in the right spot)

hu.. someone said that hdl format in seconds, but i have a previously fat32 format Samsung 20gb hd, and i have waited about 1hr to the message of the wait to format hd and nothing happens!
what can it be??
maybe because my drive is already fat32 making the format Infinity long waiting time?
