What's the difference between DVD-R and +R discs?
I am just curious to know in case I am buying the wrong one for a specific purpose. Thanks.

In basic terms they're slighty different structures. In practical terms theres very little difference between them.

Which one you buy will depend on what your dvd rom or burner supports and/or what the stand-alone player supports that you will be playing them on.

You always want to make sure you are buying the correct disc. What you need to do first is go to my computer into the properties and find out what type of burner you actually have and if it supports
dvd-r or dvd+r disc or both. Sometimes it will support both. Then sometimes it will read a dvd+r disc but only write to a dvd-r disc. This is the type of burner ther I have. If you get the wrong type of disc you can mess up your system. I this helps

most newer burner support both Plus R and Dash R, you can look on the box it came in to see also and remember its either Plus R or Dash R NOT minus R or negitive R as some people refer to them

Maybe the drive writes backwards or something ;)

If your burner writes to a - disc then you must get a minus disc. If you get a plus disc for a minus burner you will get an error and your programs will lock up on you. Thus virtual memory is removed from your computer. Make sure you get the correct dvd-r or dvd+r disc that your burner supports. Its the type of disc not the brand.

You can also get a +r disk and booktype it to a -r disk and it will play on -r standalones. I do.

No, the software will tell you it's an incompatible disc, thats all.

DVD+R(W) structure is technically superior to DVD-R(W) structure, but for most users the difference is academic, the exception to this is in the case of re-linking.
If your burner has to suspend operation during a burn because of say, a buffer under-run, it must accurately rejoin the previously burned track. The mechanism for this is much less accurate for DVD-R(W) media and will always generate more errors than re-linking with DVD+R(W). Of course, most experienced DVD burning folk go to great lengths to avoid even a suggestion of under-run, so even this difference becomes academic.

On modern standalones there should be little difference between good burns on either media.
The problem is that many of the early standalone players could only read DVD-R, so until all of those old players are scrapped, the strict answer is that at any given time, DVD-R can be read by the most players.
Now, when we turn to RW media, that's a whole other can of worms.

The best of both worlds and most compatable format is dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom but not all dvdrw drives are capable of this and so I'll leave it at that.

I just ran out of Go5 Ridata 8X's DVD-R's.
What should I get next .
I do have 1 standalone that is around 4-5 years old but, I do have also newer standalone that plays many different medias and a dvd-rom in my pc. Which will play fine in all.
Also my dvd burner is an Artec , I think it supports both + & -.

well, i go with what works for me personally, i have found my Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims to be flawless each and every time. :)
i usually use dvd+r format for both brands, but, bitset my booktype to dvd-rom as many members have suggested earlier in this thread, works great for all of my standalones and my wife's family players too.
im excessive to say the very least, good luck with your future backups~ :)

Can anyone send me link or website so that I can upgrade my firmware for my Lite On 167T DVD-Rom ?
Lite On doesn't even show it anymore on their website .
I tried going to Doom9 and downloaded an upgrade with no luck.
